Durables Industry on a High with Consistent Growth in Q2


New Delhi, Delhi, India, Wednesday, August 11, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association (CEAMA) today announced an overall industry growth in the second quarter across product categories.

LCD televisions, backed by sporting and festive-season demand, gained major sales from April to June 2010. CEAMA expects LCD TVs to surpass CRT TVs in sales by 2012, while CRTs will have a continued demand from low-penetration areas. AV market is majorly impacted by 3-D LED's and Blu-Ray technologies. In Q2 2010 estimated total no of LCD televisions sold were 0.6 million vs 0.3 , million units in Q2 2009.

In Q2, 2010 total no of Air conditioners units sold were 1.32 million whereas in Q 2 2009 industry registered sale of 1.2 million unit. Refrigerators registered a 30 % growth with total sales of 1.7 million in Q2, 2010 and in Q2 2009 1.3 million units were sold.

Commenting on the exceptional performance of the Industry, Mr Pradeep Kumar, spokesperson CEAMA, said, "The durable industry has seen a consistent growth. India is a strategic market for all the multinational giants in durable market and they are planning to make huge investment to grab the maximum share. The durable industry growth is aided by increasing household income, local manufacturing and expanding distribution networks etc."

The Indian consumer durables industry has witnessed a considerable change over the last few years. Changing lifestyle, greater affordability, and a surge in advertising have been instrumental in bringing about a sea change in the consumer behavior. Today, the consumer is more aware about energy-efficient appliances. As for LCD televisions, they are fast replacing CRT, therefore a demand surge.

The major players in the consumer durable industry, depending on the consumer preferences, are focusing on structural revamping, launching new competitively priced products, increasing service-footprints and improving digital presence. They are replacing and upgrading their products - particularly ACs and refrigerators -- to drive the market demand in metros and Tier II cities.
