Lessons from Recession will Help SMEs' Future Roadmap

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Monday, November 30, 2009 -- (Business Wire India) -- -- Learning lessons from recession important for future upswing

-- SMEs should graduate from growth by default to growth by design

-- SME Credit rating can act as bridge between SMEs and lending institutions

The issue of raising a robust tech-aligned SME in India came in for intensive discussion at the "Envisioning the Wired SME" conference, organized by The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) and IndiaMART.com, at the Sheraton, Saket, in New Delhi on Saturday.

Discussing the issue of propelling the growth of SMEs in a focused session, Mr. Rakesh Rewari, Deputy Managing Director, SIDBI, who also chaired the session, noted, "Despite the recession, the Indian SME has been able to produce winners in the midst of a global slowdown, because they largely do not have any capital expenditure or big buck spends." Exhorting SMEs to learn from their showing in the past two years and prepare for the post-recession upswing, Rewari said, "Product diversification and tapping the overseas market will always allow an SME to sustain its value and grow faster." Panelists for the session included Praful Jain, Head, Enterprise Practice, Markets, KPMG, R. Ganesh, Deputy General Manager, ICICI Bank and Parag Patki, CEO, SME Rating Agency of India.

Addressing the importance of growth, at a time many SMEs have managed to make a standing for themselves in the market, Praful Jain, Head, Enterprise Practice, Markets, KPMG, emphasized on the criticality of courage and conviction and a dire need to innovate, which would go a long way in overcoming resource crunch, something that plagues almost every SME. "With a problem-solving approach, if SMEs can use their existing resources judiciously, there is a conscious effort required to convert growth by default into growth by design. That will become a pillar for its growth."

Addressing the need gap of SMEs' needing small funding, R. Ganesh, Deputy General Manager of ICICI Bank, underlined the bank's commitment to SMEs, which gets addressed by a separate dedicated SME unit, which addresses the needs of SMEs, which are not big enough to attract the attention of venture capital funds or angel investors. Asking SMEs to become more transparent and accountable for better credit support, Ganesh said, "There are limitations. Banks are extremely conscious about an SME's transaction history, and that is where most SMEs cannot sail through."

Parag Palki, CEO, SME Rating Agency of India, outlined the gradually increasing significance of a credit rating regime, which helps SMEs liaise with banks and funding agencies, by proving their credentials. "The mission is to act as a bridge between SMEs and lending institutions. A good rating will automatically aid and support an SME's growth story."

BWI: People Living with HIV/AIDS do not Get Life Saving TB Treatment on Time

Press release from Business Wire India
Source: action - Advocacy to Control TB Internationally

People Living with HIV/AIDS do not Get Life Saving TB Treatment on Time
Delay in getting TB Diagnosis and Treatment Puts Lives at Risk, even as World AIDS Day 2009 marks year of Universal Access and Treatment

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Monday, November 30, 2009 -- (Business Wire India) -- A multi-centre study conducted by INP+ with support from ACTION (Advocacy to Control TB Internationally) Project shows significant delays in both detecting and treating TB, especially in People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in India. Nearly half of the 2.4 million people living with HIV/AIDS in India contract TB, making it the leading cause of death, yet less than 5 percent are automatically tested for TB.

Coming to the end of phase one, of a multi center operational study in Manipur, on barriers to accessing and adhering to TB treatments, especially with a focus on people living with HIV AIDS, the study highlights both patient end and provider end causes for delays in getting appropriate TB diagnosis and treatment initiated. Lack of awareness and knowledge about TB ranks high among the patient end causes for delay in seeking appropriate TB diagnosis and treatment services. Distance to the nearest TB service delivery point is a key barrier from the provider end, with average travel times exceeding 90 minutes for over half of the population surveyed. Nearly a third of the survey population also reported paying for their medications, indicating an incomplete reach and awareness of the free national TB control program (RNTCP).

"People living with HIV/AIDS are among the most vulnerable to getting TB infections. Any delay in this vulnerable population getting life saving TB treatments is also indicative of broad systemic issues of accessibility that need to be addressed quickly", said Dr. Venkatesan Chakrapani, MD, the lead researcher on this study from INP+. "The delay in getting appropriate diagnosis for HIV co-infected individuals also reflects on the failure to get newer diagnostic tests on to the market and in our healthcare delivery points", he added. The currently used standard microscopy based sputum tests fail to detect TB in samples from people living with HIV and having infectious TB, leading to false negative tests and delays in getting a correct diagnosis.

"There needs to be a further deepening of the service delivery to avoid long travel times for sick people", said Dr. Bobby John from Global Health Advocates, one of the advisors on this study. "Distance, and poor understanding cause people to drop out of their medications more often than not", he added. 10 percent of the survey participants reported stopping their treatments for a week or more. Incomplete treatment adherence raises the risk of multi drug resistant TB for the individual and in the community.

Supporting the study findings, and echoing the urgency to see greater coordination between HIV services delivered through the national AIDS control program, Vivek Dharmaraj from the Advocacy to Control TB Internationally (ACTION) Project in India said: "People living with HIV should get TB diagnosis and treatment services from one window. It is no point putting people on life saving anti retroviral treatments for HIV, to see them die of TB." India's national AIDS control program has put nearly 250,000 on anti retroviral treatment, of the estimated 2.4 million people living with HIV.

ABOUT INP+ and ACTION

INP + is an ISO 9001:2000 certified CBO - a national network for people living with HIV/AIDS. INP+ is a social movement by and for People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) in enforcing the recognition for Human Rights of PLHIV in India. INP+ has waged a long and intensive struggle against fear, ignorance, prejudice and despair born out of the epidemic and stood to represent courage, insight, acceptance and hope to hundreds and thousands of People Living with HIV/AIDS.

The Advocacy to Control Tuberculosis Internationally (ACTION) project is an international partnership of advocates working to mobilize resources to treat and prevent the spread of tuberculosis (TB), a global disease that kills one person every 20 seconds. ACTION's underlying premise is that more rapid progress can be made against the global TB epidemic by building increased support for resources for effective TB control among key policymakers and other opinion leaders in both high TB burden countries (HBCs) and donor countries.

BWI: Crowcon Launches Gas-Tec Hydrocarbon Gas Detector for Leak Survey and Localisation

Crowcon Launches Gas-Tec Hydrocarbon Gas Detector for Leak Survey and Localisation

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Monday, November 30, 2009 -- (Business Wire India) -- Crowcon's new Gas-Tec portable hydrocarbon gas detector is designed for rapid leak survey and localisation in applications such as gas distribution networks and landfill sites. Using Crowcon's tried and tested flame ionisation chamber, the Gas-Tec also features next generation technology such as GPS, data and event logging. The new device allows survey teams to track progress and quickly pinpoint and record areas of significant interest.

Photo 2: http://www.halmapr.com/crowcon/gas-tec_landfill.jpg (847 KB)
(Photo caption 2: Crowcon's Gas-Tec portable hydrocarbon gas detector showing a landfill site in the background)

Increasingly, gas distribution and infrastructure companies are focussing on reducing the number and volume of leaks along their pipelines. Leaks have cost, environmental and safety implications, so pinpointing and repairing them quickly is essential. Methane emitted from landfill sites also poses a severe explosion risk - it is generated during the working life of a landfill site and for as long as 40 years after a site has been covered over, so constant monitoring is essential.

Storing survey reports and service and calibration records are now a more frequent requirement, influenced by health and safety regulations. Also, with many operating companies being forced to reduce personnel, there is an increased demand for products that require minimal training and set-up times to use.

Crowcon developed the Gas-Tec specifically to address these issues, including features to help companies minimise leaks quickly and efficiently, with minimal manpower. GPS position logging, for example, enhances record keeping by assigning latitude, longitude and distance above sea level to data readings. Users can also view their current location, offering the precise location to back-up crews for immediate leak management. Another useful feature is data and event logging, allowing users to download full survey information for survey traceability using 'drag and drop' via a USB interface.

Weighing just 2.4kg (without the gas bottle), the Gas-Tec is worn across the body and is ergonomically designed to sit comfortably whilst in use. Simple and intuitive to operate, its liquid crystal display and soft keys offer full sequence instructions, in-operation options, service and calibration set-up and alerts. Menu prompts guide users through start-up and shut-down procedures, reducing training requirements. The device can also be customised, with users able to set preferences for features such as preferred units, display settings, date format and language.

Enhanced electronic controls increase battery and cylinder life, while pressure and flow transducers manage hydrogen and sample flow rates. A service and calibration timer also reminds operators when maintenance is required, ensuring the unit is always operable and in optimum working condition. The Gas-Tec also includes an optional 'service lock' facility, ensuring it cannot be used in the field whilst out of calibration.

Based around Crowcon's original tried and tested Gas-Tec 'engine' detection method, this next generation model is already proven, fit for purpose and suited to the rigours of everyday use. With a response time of less than two seconds, the Gas-Tec is calibrated to methane, with conversion factors for other common hydrocarbons available. It has a detection range of 0 - 10,000 ppm and is accurate to within +/-10%. Battery life is over 22 hours, allowing continual use for a full shift. Battery recharge time is only 2 ½ hours.

Supplied in a wheeled ABS impact resistant case with a fitted foam insert, it is ingress protected to IP54 and can be used outdoors in all weather conditions. Accessories include a trigger survey kit and an in-vehicle survey tool allowing detection at speeds of up to 30km/hour. Probe assemblies are also available for all types of applications, including borehole, straight probe, cup attachment and detection trolley. Other useful accessories are available, such as vehicle chargers, earphones, spare hydrogen cylinders and a hydrogen filling panel.

The CEAT Cricket Year commences on 1st May and ends on 30th April of the following calendar year. The cricketer and team that accumulate the highest number of points in their respective categories at the end of this twelve-month period are declared the CEAT Cricket Rating International Cricketer and Team of the Year respectively.

BWI: Industry Stalwarts Underline Critical need to Wire up SMEs

Industry Stalwarts Underline Critical need to Wire up SMEs

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Saturday, November 28, 2009 -- (Business Wire India) --
-- Wiring up an SME is not a choice, but only way forward
-- A strong SME media is required to grow the domestic industry
-- SMEs need pay-per-use models to embrace technology faster

The Indian SME can only grow if he gets wired. And that is possible if his dependency on people is removed, according to Bharat Goenka, Chairman and Managing Director of Tally Solutions. Goenka was among a list of eminent speakers at "Envisioning the Wired SME" conference, organized by The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) and IndiaMART.com, at the Sheraton, Saket, in New Delhi on Saturday.

Speaking to the packed audience, Goenka, who was speaking about his recipe for SMEs to grow the domestic business, stressed on the need to grow, for which everyone needs time. And that's where technology and online connectivity comes in handy. Reiterating that getting wired should be treated as the means, and not as the end for any SME, Goenka exhorted Indian SMEs to reduce unorganized processes and reduce errors.

The conference, a first of its kind that brought together thought leaders from the banking, technology, marketing, trade organizations, successful SMEs, credit rating agencies and government bodies, was hugely attended. The first session, which was titled, "Growing the Domestic Industry", was chaired by Mr. Pradeep Gupta, President TiE Delhi and Chairman and Managing Director of Cybermedia Group and also included Mr. Anil Bhardwaj, Secretary General, Federation of Small and Medium Enterprises (FISME), Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director General, Bureau of Energy Efficiency and Mr. Dinesh Agarwal, Founder and CEO, IndiaMART.com.

Attributing the slow growth in the SME sector to a sequential gap, Mr. Dinesh Agarwal, Founder and CEO of IndiaMART.com said, "The decline and gradual extinction of printed yellow pages has really affected an SME's route to garner more business. Online yellow pages have not been able to take up their print predecessor's space. That's because SMEs were not even fundamentally wired - with a phone, a PC, an internet connection and some basic software." Asking the government and industry to make it simpler for SMEs to get help, Agarwal said, "It is too little help and too difficult to get it. Let the government be realistic about the amount of market development assistance it offers to an ecosystem of more than 5 million SMEs. And to match that, the IT industry should find a way to make a bundled offer of a PC, an internet connection and the basic software available to SMEs for as little as Rs 500 per month. That can help bring the growth of the SME sector to inflection point much faster."

Speaking as an observer of SMEs for the past 30 years, Mr. Anil Bhardwaj, Secretary General, Federation of Small and Medium Enterprises (FISME) said, "ICT is not a choice but the only way to progress and build better businesses. Whether SMEs are wired or not, is not the question or the choice. 24x7x365 connectivity is the only way out. Success at an amazing speed can be achieved once technology-driven processes can turn information into a commodity and dismantles barriers. With most SMEs in the manufacturing sector, ICT infrastructure is the need. "

The one-day event featured six sessions on diverse topics of relevance to SMEs - ranging from technology, marketing and scaling up.

The event was attended by an enthusiastic audience comprising bankers, representatives from industry associations, government bodies, CEOs of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), senior representatives from software giants, entrepreneurship development institutes and rating agencies.

The inaugural session was chaired by Mr. Pradeep Gupta, President of TiE and CMD of CyberMedia Group, who threw light upon the problems faced by the sector in understanding technology and adopting it in their work processes. He also emphasized the role of social networking and connectivity in growing businesses.

BWI: Dairies in Saurashtra and Kutch Region March Ahead, Procuring One Million Litres of Milk Per Day

Press release from Business Wire India

Dairies in Saurashtra and Kutch Region March Ahead, Procuring One Million Litres of Milk Per Day

Anand, Gujarat, India, Friday, November 27, 2009 -- (Business Wire India) -- The Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (Amul), the apex body of 13 Milk Unions of Gujarat having a membership of around 2.8 million farmer members have reached another milestone in the history of dairy industry of our country by creating over 1600 Village Dairy Cooperatives in Saurashtra and Kutch regions within a short span of two years. These dairy cooperatives are now collecting an unprecedented quantity of over one million litres of milk everyday. As a result of this initiative of GCMMF, milk producers in Saurshtra and Kutch particularly in these 1600 villages now receive milk prices in the range of Rs. 310 per kg fat to as high as Rs. 360 per kg fat. These remunerative prices are the highest they ever received in the past and are equal to other developed milksheds of Gujarat.

New District Unions have come up in Rajkot, Surendranagar, Bhavnagar, Amreli, and Junagadh. Recently, the milk producers of Kutch have started their own milk union to overcome the economic exploitation by the private companies and milk procurement agents in the semi-arid region and largest district of Gujarat. Daily milk procurement of the new unions at Surendragar and Rajkot is approximately 3,25,000 litres each. Bhavnagar union receives 1,35,000 litres per day. Unions at Amreli and Junagdh receive around 55,000 litres each on a daily basis. Even Kutch Union that started only three weeks ago on Dev Diwali has crossed 12,000 litres and hopes to collect 1,00,000 litres per day very soon.

All along an impression was given that Saurashtra and Kutch regions lack in dairy development. But Govt. of Gujarat registered District Coop Unions in Junagadh, Bhavnagar, Kutch, Amreli, etc only recently. With this, the farmers of Saurashtra region have proved they too are fully competent to run their cooperatives and collect a million litres of milk every day.

With the heritage of Gir cows and Jafrabadi and Banni buffalos, it is possible that in the very near future milk collection will surpass 30 lakh litres from Kutch and Saurashtra District Cooperatives organised on the world renowned Amul pattern.

BWI: Spirax Marshall Receives the CII Innovative Energy Saving Product Award

Press release from Business Wire India

Spirax Marshall Receives the CII Innovative Energy Saving Product Award

Pune, Maharashtra, India, Thursday, November 26, 2009 -- (Business Wire India) -- The Wireless Trap Monitoring System, from Spirax Marshall - a Forbes Marshall group company, has been recognized as "Innovative Energy Saving Product", at the CII 10th National Award for Excellence in Energy Management 2009. The event was organized by CII - Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre on the 19th and 20th of November 2009, at Chennai.

This innovative product has been developed for the first time in India and is a network for monitoring the health of steam traps at dispersed locations in a plant. This product has application in all process industries such as Refineries, Pharma, Paper, Rubber, Textile, etc., where steam is used for heating. In an installed base of more than a million process steam traps, leaking traps result in a loss of thousands of tonnes of steam annually, which if saved is equivalent to meeting the needs of 500 process plants for free.

This adhoc self adjusting wireless network of traps avoids cabling to remote trap locations. It's centralized web-based Graphical interface reduces operator intervention and makes data available on the internet at any time. It helps monitor and report the overall health of traps in a plant. It broadcasts an alarm when there is a steam leak in a trap or when the trap is water logging and not ejecting condensate. It's handheld communicator helps to configure, download and troubleshoot the network and application data. Above all, it has a short payback period and does not need any expensive software licenses to operate.

It does online data analysis and intelligently generates reports on steam loss, monetary loss, deviation from benchmarks, etc. This enables the user to take immediate action and decisions on the existing plant condition. Unlike its wired counterpart in the market, it eliminates the need to physically go up to each trap and check the condition.

With the rising energy costs and the problem of global climate change, the efficient use of energy is imperative. The wireless trap monitor can produce steam loss calculations, measure energy savings, the direct monetary benefits and help a plant achieve its energy efficiency goals.

BWI: CORRECTING and REPLACING Symantec Study Emphasizes Need for Indian SMBs to Build Disaster Recovery Strategies

CORRECTING and REPLACING Symantec Study Emphasizes Need for Indian SMBs to Build Disaster Recovery Strategies
In Spite of Awareness 91 Percent SMBs do not have a Formal Disaster Preparedness Plan in Place

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Thursday, November 26, 2009 -- (Business Wire India) -- Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced the India findings of its annual 2009 Global SMB Disaster Preparedness Survey. The report reflects the attitudes and practices of small- and mid-sized businesses (SMB) and their customers toward technology disaster preparedness. It also throws light on a large discrepancy between how SMBs perceive their disaster readiness and their actual level of preparedness. The report indicates that natural disasters, virus attacks, malicious employee behavior, and changes in IT infrastructure are key drivers for Disaster Recovery adoption in India.

It has been observed that in around 42 percent SMBs the onus of data protection and recovery lies with IT departments. The growing awareness, need, and importance of disaster planning have led to owners and senior executives (39 percent) actively participate in its management and execution.

"A startling fact is that though SMBs are well aware about outages and their impact, however, it hasn't materialized into their preparedness," said Ajay Verma, Director, Channels and Alliances, Symantec India. "While no one wants a disaster to occur, the reality is that they happen and rather than continuing to be unprepared, companies need to take simple proactive steps to protect their information. As companies communicate their preparedness plans to their customers, they strengthen those relationships and become more trusted partners."

Confidence High Regarding Preparedness

The findings show that SMBs are confident in their disaster preparedness plans. 73 percent of respondents say they are somewhat/very satisfied with their disaster plans, and a 34 percent say they feel somewhat/very protected in case a disaster strikes.

Reality Shows Confidence Unwarranted

However, the practices of SMBs reveal that this confidence is unwarranted. The average SMB has experienced three outages within the past 12 months, with the leading causes being virus or hacker attacks, power outages or natural disasters. This is alarming as almost half report they do not yet have a plan to deal with such disruptions. This SMB downtime costs their customers tens of thousands of rupees each year due to which the SMBs can -- and often do -- lose business as a direct result of being unprepared for disasters.

The survey found that only 18 percent SMBs back up daily and an average SMB backs up only 50 percent of their company and customer data on a daily basis.

Customers Significantly Impacted By Downtime

These outages were impactful as well, with 50 percent lasting four hours or more. One in two customers (59 percent) reported losing a lot of important data. Simultaneously each SMB also refer to material, presentations, whitepapers etc to prepare a recovery plan.

Recommendations

Although 91 percent of SMBs at present do not have formal disaster preparedness plan, of those without plans, nearly 76 percent say they will create one within the next six months.

-- Determine your needs: SMBs should take time to decide what critical information should be secured and protected. Customer, financial and business information, trade secrets and critical documents should be prioritized. SMBs should monitor industry reports to identify and prevent threats that SMBs face.

-- Engage trusted advisors: With limited time, budget and employees, SMBs can look to a solution provider to help create plans, implement automated protection solutions and monitor for trends and threats that SMBs should protect against. They can also educate employees on retrieving information from backups when needed and suggest offsite storage facilities to protect critical data.

-- Automate where you can: Automating the backup process ensures that it is not overlooked. SMBs can reduce the costs of downtime by implementing automated tools that minimize human involvement and address other weaknesses in disaster recovery plans.

-- Test annually: Recovering data is the worst time to learn that critical files were not backed up as planned. Disaster recovery testing is invaluable and SMBs should seek to improve the success of testing by evaluating and implementing testing methods which are non-disruptive.

BWI: Gujarat Dairies Urge for Immediate Government Action in Fodder Crisis

Press release from Business Wire India
Source: Amul

Gujarat Dairies Urge for Immediate Government Action in Fodder Crisis

Anand, Gujarat, India, Thursday, November 26, 2009 -- (Business Wire India) -- In a meeting convened last week in Delhi by Secretary (Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Fisheries), all state milk federation has urged government to take urgent action to overcome cattle feed and fodder crisis. It was discussed that government had failed to take any appropriate action to prevent export of de-oiled cakes. No steps have been taken so far to reduce the cost of input material for cattle feed. This has resulted into extreme surge in input cost for farmers.

It is pertinent to note that dairies of Gujarat had submitted a detailed memorandum to Honorable Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in September 09 with suggestions to take following actions:

-- Restore custom duty on Milk Powder to 15 % on 10,000 MT TRQ and to 40% on butteroil

-- Impose export duty on export of Oilmeals, de-oiled cake, cattlefeed etc which helps in price reduction of cattlefeed within the country and removal of VAT & Excise duty on use of Molasses in cattle feed leading to reduction in domestic cattle feed prices

-- VAT on all value-added Dairy products to be fixed to 4%.

Prices of cattle-feed ingredients normally fall from the time the kharif crop is sown in July to its harvesting in November. Last year, prices of major feed raw materials fell between 8.5 % for rapeseed extractions to 29 % in the case of rice polish during the July-November period. But this year - mainly due to drought - the anticipated trend in decline of prices of raw material did not take place. As a result, average prices of de-oiled rice bran this month are 24 % higher compared with November 2008, with the corresponding year-on-year increase being 23 % for rapeseed extractions, 32 % for rice polish, 18 % for jowar and 43 % for molasses. As a result the price of cattlefeed being sold by co-operative dairies to their members in Gujarat has gone up to Rs 9500 per MT from Rs 7800 per MT last year - a burden of 20% on the production, while the dairies are still making loss on cattlefeed.

To compensate farmers for their higher milk production costs, dairies have had to raise procurement prices. GCMMF unions are currently paying farmers an average price of Rs 318 for every kg of fat, which is 16 per cent more than last year's Rs 275 at this point of time.

It is unfortunate that milk producers have to bear the brunt of inflation in food prices which is barely getting compensated for higher cattle feed prices.

GCMMF has once again requested central as well as state government to look into the matter urgently and take necessary actions like abolition of excise duty & VAT on molasses for use in cattlefeed, imposing duty on export of de-oiled cake. GCMMF had also suggested to reduce VAT to 4% on all value added dairy products.

It may be noted that during 2008-09, the GCMMF unions recorded an average milk procurement of 87.19 lakh kg per day (LKPD), a 15 % jump over the previous year's 75.90 LKPD. However, this year, the growth has slowed down to 6-7 % mainly because of higher fodder and feed costs, which has offset higher milk procurement prices. This could eventually impact milk supplies and prices further.
