Reliance Industries Limited and Ericsson India today showcased the results from the first field trial of LTE-TDD (Long Term Evolution) mobile system technology. This trial demonstrated the outstanding performance of LTE technology and the complete eco-system available today to support the technology. The trial was conducted at the Reliance Corporate Park, Navi Mumbai, the group's iconic campus, which is the nerve center for RIL's ambitious plans for launching next generation mobile broadband services on a pan-India basis.

The trial showcased LTE-TDD network's exceptional performance by achieving the healthy balanced peak rates of 80 Mbps in the downlink and 20 Mbps in the uplink.for the specified configuration/setup. The eco system capabilities were also showcased using ST Ericsson dongles connected over the air to the base station. Full mobility with flawless delivery of applications such as HD Multimedia Streaming, LIVE TV was demonstrated with on-the-move speeds of 50 and 70 kilometers per hour as well as a seamless handover among the number of LTE Base Station Sectors.

IDC findings indicate a need for improvement in Web infrastructures

This survey ( http://www.akamai.com/dl/akamai/idc_cloud_mobility_wp.pdf ) is focused on trends driving demand for Web applications, and reveals that businesses have become dependent on the Internet for their daily operations. The survey also outlines the challenges IT departments face as they strive to improve application performance and the end-user experience.

According to the survey results, Web applications delivered over the cloud will surge by 40% over the next 12 months and drive IT managers to further improve the performance of their Web infrastructures. 26% of the 423 organizations polled have experienced productivity issues due to poor access to Web applications.

Organizations were queried about their business expansion plans as well as the utilization of Internet and cloud-based computing for business functions. Initial findings show incredible growth in the Asia-Pacific region - about 32% of the organizations polled across Asia-Pacific plan to set up branch offices over the next 12 months, with India leading with aggressive business expansion plans. Such expansion will change the nature and complexion of the workforce. With increased mobility and business agility, companies are able to expand their operations quickly and cost-effectively.

According to Adrian Dominic Ho, principal for IDC's Asia-Pacific Practice Group covering Communications and Service research, and author of the IDC white paper, growth in extended enterprises will also contribute to the rise of the borderless world, resulting in a surge in Web application adoption. One of the most challenging tasks IT managers will face is ensuring they deliver acceptable levels of Web application performance, and thus a superior user experience.

With more than 50% of organizations currently conducting online transactions, the big growth areas over the next 12 months will be mobile access and streaming video. For mobile access, organizations in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia are leading the region, with up to 86% of those in Malaysia expected to have mobile access to Web applications over the next 12 months. In view of this, 20% of organizations across the region plan to give employees mobile access and support bandwidth-heavy streaming video applications over the same period.

One of the key reasons organizations invest heavily in Web applications is to empower their employees and build an extended enterprise. Increased mobility means organizations have to think about providing employees easy access to corporate applications, regardless of their location. Greater workforce mobility, growing adoption of mobile technology for business use; and recent improvements in centralized visibility, management, and control of mobile costs, have rendered mobility an inexpensive and important strategic asset for many organizations.

One of the key factors driving the growth in enterprise mobility is the proliferation of smart devices, which give employees ubiquitous access to business applications. In the region, IDC expects smart phone penetration to reach 100% by 2015 in the mature markets, while emerging markets will require a further two to three years.

Cloud services have been one of the most-discussed technologies over the last 12 to 24 months. The number of applications that will be delivered via the cloud is expected to increase by 40% over the next 12 months, albeit from a low base. ANZ and Singapore are leading with having corporate applications delivered over the cloud today. India is expected to experience a doubling in cloud adoption, with the proportion of applications being delivered over the cloud expected to surge by 100% over the next 12 months.

Top Issues Faced by Organizations

Across India, security concerns continue to dominate with more than 15% of respondents citing this as their top concern, as more data-sensitive applications are made available online. More importantly, security teams often find it challenging to keep up with the increase in security vulnerability, as more applications are added onto the Web. Other top concerns across the region were poor performance of Web applications, an inability to access rich media applications, delays in rolling out rich content applications, and the inability to efficiently share files.

According to IDC, the application delivery market will experience another year of innovation and market expansion. This tool accurately and reliably tests for TB within 90 minutes among PLHA; TB is the leading cause of death among People Living with HIV (PLHA) in India.

International NGO Global Health Advocates India - ACTION Project, medical experts, join the call for availability of tests like Xpert MTB/RIF, that use molecular testing, close to the PLHA community, for speedy diagnostics and treatment.

The largest group of People Living with HIV(PLHA) in India, with a network of 2.5 lakh members, INP + has made a concerted call for availability for better diagnostics than can reliably test for TB and MDR TB among PLHA. Tools like the Xpert MTB/RIF, based on molecular testing, can produce highly reliable results in less than two hours. The current gold standard for such tests uses the liquid culture method, which can take as long as three months to show whether a person living with HIV has TB or not.

Publication of the performance of Xpert MTB/RIF in a large multicentre trial was heralded as representing a new era in tuberculosis diagnostics.

Though preventable and treatable TB is the leading cause of mortality in people living with HIV; in India nearly half of the estimated 2.4 million people affected by HIV/AIDS are likely to be also infected with Tuberculosis.

With such large numbers of people living with HIV in India, the need for a robust and fully integrated TB/HIV control programme in India is essential. Without early diagnosis and rapid initiation on proper treatment, an estimated 90% percent of PLHAs could die within months of developing active TB.

Referrals from AIDS control programs (like from the Integrated Counseling and Testing Centre or ICTC) to TB Control Programmes(under the Revised National TB Control Programme or RNTCP) is part of HIV/TB co-infection control management but many PLHAs don't make it from point to the other.

KK Abraham, General Secretary INP+ points out that, "While guidelines recommend that PLHAs should test for tuberculosis the inconvenience of two separate testing centers, different timings and bearing the cost of transport in addition to lost income prohibit many for getting their TB test done early. If TB testing could be done at the same place that the HIV counseling and testing is done, then there would be 100% testing of PLHA. The patient-friendly Xpert MTB/RIF makes this possible."

Xpert MTB/RIF is the first automated molecular tuberculosis test developed that has the potential to be a point-of-care tool. Placed strategically at ICTCs, the tool could allow PLHAs to get tested instantly. This one-window testing system could foster blanket screening of PLHAs and prevent drop-outs that occur in the current scenario where testing sites differ for HIV and TB. Widespread availability of this tool will help to detect and treat tuberculosis among PLHA much faster, vastly improving quality of life. However, the technology and the test- kits at current price indications would be prohibitive for most developing countries. The Indian biotech industry can play a significant in developing domestic models and manufacturing capacity.

Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, Monday, November 29, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- Ahmedabad based pharma major Cadila Pharmaceuticals Limited has received a prestigious Wellcome Trust Award under the new R&D for Affordable Healthcare in India initiative to support a phase III clinical trial of PolycapTM, a combination pill to reduce the risk of Cardiovascular diseases.

Cardio Vascular Diseases (CVD), predominantly heart disease and stroke, account for around 30% of all deaths around the world. The PolycapTM offers a primary prevention strategy to individuals who are at high risk for these illnesses.

PolycapTM comprises three blood pressure reducing agents, including a diuretic and a beta blocker, together with a cholesterol-lowering statin. All of the agents have been chosen based on the evidence of their reducing cardiovascular risk and generic drug status.

The combination pill has already been tested in over 2000 volunteers across 50 centers in India as part of The Indian PolycapTM Study (TIPS) published in the Lancet in 2009. Results from that phase II trial found that use of the drug reduces the risk of coronary heart disease by 62% and stroke by 48%.

The Wellcome Trust award will support the study of at least 5,000 individuals with no previous history of heart attack or stroke. The placebo-controlled trial will recruit men over the age of 55 and women over 60 that have been identified as being at increased risk of CVD through a questionnaire based on family history and lifestyle factors. The investigators will assess whether taking PolycapTM for a period of five years can cut the risk of CVD, by monitoring the incidence of death due to heart attack, non-fatal heart attack, and non-fatal stroke.
