Canon India Pvt. Limited, India's No 1. Complete Digital Imaging Company, today unveiled their new full frame DSLR aimed at professionals and discerning enthusiasts, the EOS 5D Mark III. Developed from the ground up with numerous intelligent, and never-seen-before features, the EOS 5D Mark III, is the perfect choice for serious amateurs, enthusiasts and professionals. The EOS 5D Mark III will be available for sale in April 2012.
Some of the highlights include a newly developed 22.3MP, full frame CMOS sensor, with greater per-pixel quality and dynamic range than before and an even wider usable ISO range. The brand new 61-point High Density Reticular Auto Focus (AF) system, with 41 cross-type points, is another highlight adding a new dimension in versatility to the focusing system. The 63-zone, Dual-layer Metering Sensor, is able to achieve accurate exposure irrespective of the ambient lighting conditions. Finally, the EOS 5D Mark III is able to shoot at its maximum resolution of 22.3 megapixels at a jaw dropping 6FPS. Full HD 1080p video recording at 30FPS and Finally, the same DIGIC 5+ processor found in the flagship EOS 1-DX allows for faster processing, dual media recording slots, The CF slot supports UDMA compatible cards, and the SD card slot supports Eye-Fi compatible media.
Commenting on the launch, Dr. Alok Bharadwaj, Senior Vice President, Canon India said, "The lines between amateurs and professionals are blurring as more and more enthusiasts are demanding quality results and are willing to shell out for it. The 5D Mark III is a product aimed at discerning buyers who demand performance irrespective of the kind of photography they are doing. It is fast, offers stunning results and is a true blue all-rounder that is capable of satisfying today's generation of quality obsessed enthusiasts. "
"Most interesting fact of the reality is that the previous model EOS 5D Mark II was a killer and created a big market for itself. This new model will leverage that user base as customers upgrade." added Dr. Alok Bharadwaj.
-- Unbeatable image quality and resolution with the new 22.3MP Full Frame sensor
The new EOS 5D Mark III leads from the front with a newly developed 22.3MP Full Frame sensor. This sensor has been developed specifically to maintain the ideal balance between resolution and noise. At 22.3 megapixels, the 5D Mark III is aimed at professionals who are looking at large size prints and the highest resolution-demanding tasks.
-- Improved quality at high ISOs
The EOS 5D Mark III features a new completely new photodiode construction, as well as improvements in the transistors themselves, and this, coupled with the improved processing of the DIGIC 5+ image processor means the 5D Mark III is highly versatile even in less than ideal light.
-- ISO performance is improved by 2 steps over the EOS 5D Mark II.
For most genres like street photography, wildlife and landscape photography, and even wedding and portrait photography (that are gradually shifting away from artificial lighting as more and more professionals look to get a more natural look by utilizing ambient lighting), the 5D Mark III is an indispensable tool offering a standard ISO range of ISO 100 - 25,600, and an expanded ISO range of a previously unseen ISO 50 - 102,400. While capturing videos, the standard ISO range is 100 - 12,800, with a high ISO option of 25,600.
-- Faster processing, and higher image quality with DIGIC 5+ image processor
The DIGIC 5+ processor is the fastest image processor Canon has ever built. It allows 1.3 times faster continuous shooting compared to the DIGIC 4 and this allows the 5D Mark III to shoot at a blistering 6 FPS at 22.3 megapixels.
Evolved metering with the 63-zone, dual-layer iFCL Metering system
The EOS 5D Mark III employs the same 63-zone, dual-layer iFCL metering sensor that was a huge success in the EOS 7D. This metering sensor is able to achieve a stable exposure that is virtually unaffected by backlight or on-screen point light sources
-- High quality viewfinder with approx. 100% coverage
With viewfinder coverage of 100% approx, and a 0.71x viewfinder magnification, the EOS 5D Mark III has been improved over the 5D Mark II whose viewfinder offered only 98% approx coverage.
-- High Dynamic Range Mode
HDR shooting is fast becoming not only an art form, but a creative means to represent a scene in the way your eyes see it. The EOS 5D Mark III is equipped with an HD mode, that will try to capture exactly what the eyes see, including the highest and lowest contrast regions of a scene. The camera will shoot 3 images at different exposures and these are merged on the camera itself.
-- Multiple Exposures
For the first time in an EOS system, multiple exposures are supported by combining anywhere between two to nine images. This feature allows creating of a single multiple exposure image composed of two to nine exposures. Multiple exposures support 4 modes:
1) Additive - works similarly to film-based multiple exposures
2) Average - automatically underexposes each multiple exposure so the resulting image attains correct exposure
3) Comparative Bright - this mode is good for uniformly dark scenes superimposed with bright objects
4) Comparative Dark - this mode is suitable for uniformly bright scenes with darker objects
-- Full HD video recording
The EOS 5D Mark III supports full HD video recording (1080p) at 30P, 25P and 24P, while 720p video recording is supported at 60P and 50P. The video recording time is now a maximum of 29 minutes, 59 seconds, and the camera will automatically create a new file after the file size reaches 4 GB, and this is done without pausing recording. The 5D Mark III offers improved video quality than before with a reduction in the presence and occurrence of color artifacts and moiré.
-- Improved displays - making things clearer
Canon has aimed at taking no prisoners, and even the display of the 5D Mark III has received a significant upgrade to preceding models. The LCD monitor on the 5D Mark III is made of tough tempered-glass, and is larger at 3.2-inches as compared to the 5D Mark II that was 3-inches. The high resolution, 1.04 million dots display is also a first for this segment. Even the elastic polymer used between the LCD and the outer glass was carefully chosen for its optical properties and reduces reflections. Additionally, the external glass has an anti-reflection coating for further reduction in reflections.
Highly configurable controls & optimized menus
The 5D Mark III was created with one goal in mind - to create a best-in-class DSLR. And this philosophy has carried over to the menus and controls as well. Starting with the power switch that has been relocated to an identical position to the EOS 7D, the 5D Mark III has buttons that are widely spaced, and ergonomically placed, allowing for easy access to settings, and is designed for use even while wearing gloves while shooting in extreme weather conditions.
A number of key controls have been located to different parts of the body to enable more intuitive usage. Like the EOS 7D, the 5D Mark III has got a dedicated movie/image mode switch, with a dedicated button for video recording/mirror up.
