Spanco and SATHI (NGO) Introduce Primary Eye Care Services in 3 Districts of Mizoram


New Delhi, Delhi, India, Monday, December 05, 2011 -- (Business Wire India) -- The tele-ophthalmology services for preventive and primary eye care was implemented in 3 districts of Mizoram under the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of Mizoram. Government of Mizoram along with SATHI and Spanco has successfully introduced vision care services to the rural population of Mizoram.

Spanco and SATHI along with the Government of Mizoram will jointly provide quality eye care services to the rural citizens of the state. The project caters to a population of about 10, 88,573 spread across 26 Blocks. A total of eight Tele Ophthalmology centers are envisaged located in Aizawl, Champai, Lunglei, Serchhip, Lawngtlai, Saiha, Kolasib, and Mamit in the first phase.

These centers are envisaged as the next generation delivery points for Eye Care services by the state with the primary objective being to deliver Preventive and Primary Eye Care to rural citizens of the state. The centers are part of an outreach program to provide medical help to citizens in remote areas and specialized support for improvement in overall health. The citizen does not have to travel for primary health care services saving valuable time and money. These centers will also play a key role of dissemination of information about Eye-Care by Local NGO's, Augmentation of ophthalmic services for planned and quick relief, Establishment of quality infrastructure for Eye Care, an effective and integrated Eye Care Delivery Channel leading to better health for rural citizens

It is expected that over the next few months with the increase in awareness these centers will helps screen 5200 citizens every day. Ophthalmologists at the central facility of the State Government at Aizwal will provide specialized care by catering to the needs of these rural citizens from the telemedicine OPD at Aizwal.
