International Workshop on "High Performance Commercial Buildings in India" Held at DSDS 2010


New Delhi, Delhi, India, Thursday, February 04, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- An international workshop on "High Performance Commercial Buildings in India" was held under the Asia Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate. The event was organised by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in association with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Ministry of Power, Government of India supported by the United States Department of State. Present on the occasion were, Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director General, BEE, Dr. R. K. Pachauri, Director General, TERI, Dr. Leena Srivastava, Executive Director, TERI, and Mr. Saurabh Kumar, Secretary, BEE.

Welcoming the BEE & APP (Asia Pacific Partnership) initiative regarding High Performance Commercial Buildings in India, Dr. R. K. Pachauri, said, This is an area that is going to see an enormous amount of activity in the near future in India - from designed to maintenance. He further said, we really need to see how ECBC (Energy conservation building code) recommendations are going to be used. Particularly, in the case of regulation municipalities. Capacities need tobe created at the local level and we have to come out with acceptable strategies to communicate to the public.

Highlighting the need for energy efficiency in built environment, Dr Ajay Mathur stressed that ECBC compliance would make buildings more energy efficient as well as enable reduce the energy bills by almost 50%.

The project on "High Performance Commercial Buildings in India" under Asia Pacific Partnership Clean Development and Climate aims to establish relevance and impact of low energy passive strategies and ECBC recommended measures on improving energy performance of commercial buildings in 5 climatic zones of India. High performance buildings in India would thus be defined as buildings that have integrated low energy/solar passive architectural design strategies and energy efficiency measures as recommended by the Energy Conservation Building Code 2007.

The project aims at removing the barriers in the financial and policy mechanism, through impact assessment of various energy conservation measures, which would enable mainstreaming of Energy Conservation Building Code compliant High Performanec Commercial Buildings in India. The project supported, funded & guided by the US Department of State & Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Government of India, is being implemented by The Energy & Resources Institute (TERI) India, & White Box Technologies, USA.

The International workshop shared information and findings of the project work. The workshop was attended by representatives of construction industry stakeholders and corporates in India.
