Indian Consumers Choose IPS for Better TV Viewing
AC Nielsen Survey Reveals Growth in Technology Awareness in 10 Months
New Delhi, Delhi, India, Tuesday, February 02, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- The Indian market is warming up to the advantages of In-Plane Switching (IPS) technology, as revealed in a recent AC Nielsen survey for LG.
LG introduced IPS panels in India in 2009.
Developed in 1996, IPS was initially meant to improve on the poor viewing angle and the poor color reproduction of twisted nematic (TN) panels at that time. Its name comes from the main difference from the TN display, with the crystal molecules moving parallel to the panel plane instead of moving perpendicularly. This change reduces the amount of light scattering in the matrix, which gives IPS its characteristic wide-viewing angles and good color reproduction. The technology also reduces image distortion because of a fast and stable response time. It is pertinent to note here that the IPS panel gets it stable and accurate touching from its liquid crystal (LC) molecules' structure. The LC alignment in IPS mode is horizontal, an advantage for the LC does not move far from the original position even when touched, while the LC alignment in normal panels is vertical, therefore, easily scattered.
Overall, IPS panels have several advantages over conventional panels:
i) They enable vivid and clear moving images because of excellent Moving Picture Response Time (MPRT) performance and variation
ii) There is no colour distortion from any angle because of no shift in gamma rays, thus least strenuous to human eyes
iii) Touch panel is vastly stable because moving picture image sticking does not occur
iv) There's premium size advantage, because of larger panels. To exemplify, 42W is 10% larger than 40W, a gap that's equal to 12.1"
The AC Nielsen survey for LG, conducted in five metros -- Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore - has revealed IPS panel technology emerging a hot favourite among the people of the age group of 25-39. It has found that awareness for the panels has increased from 9.0% in the first wave March to 16.6% in December in the year 2009. A same pattern is also observed for top-of-mind and unaided awareness. For example in Delhi the levels have gone up from 14.1% to 23.6% while in Mumbai, it has leaped to 10.8% from 6.6% (over what duration - time band).
The survey also found that the LCD TVs are seen as high-technology products as compared to cathode-ray tube (CRT) TVs, while the general trend in the country is that a higher percentage of LCD TV owners prefer 32-inch units. At the same time there is a great demand for LG in this segment of white goods, particularly those between the age group of 35-44.
This is indicative of the fact that LGs IPS technology backed TVs are indeed the choice of the times. Added to this, all adopted IPS LCDs to meet the requirements of the sectors and professionals in the fields of design, medicine, print and space, etc. Graphic designers, major medical equipment makers like GE Medical, Philips Medical National Display, prefer IPS because doctors require stable color characteristics departments including radiology, pathology, dentistry, orthopaeadics, et al.
The Indian market understands IPS for 'clear picture' or as a 'new technology,' the survey has revealed.
About IPS:
IPS (In Plane Switching) technology is one of the most leading LCD technologies in the world. IPS technology innovatively aligns liquid crystal horizontally to increase the viewing angle and changes the LCD transmittance. IPS is mainly owned by LG Display Company. This technology was unanimously accepted in its early phase by professionals from all across the globe.
IPS enabled LCD TV particularly deserves praise on its dynamic image expression in comparison to Normal LCD TV, because the IPS liquid crystal responds faster and expresses smoother moving images. While ensuring the image sharpness, IPS is more suitable to viewing dynamic images such as the Olympic Games and can entirely satisfy consumer needs for high definition images.
About LG Display:
LG Display Co., Ltd. (NYSE: LPL, KRX: 034220) is one of the world's top maker of TFT-LCDs with 24.7 percent global market share in the fourth quarter of 2008*. LG Display currently operates eight fabrication facilities in Korea and four back-end assembly sites in Korea, China and Poland. The company has a total of 25,000 employees operating worldwide. LG Display is a leading developer and manufacturer of LCD panels for notebook computers, monitors and TVs. Other manufacturing areas include panels for consumer devices such as portable media players, cellular telephones and GPS navigation systems, as well as panels used in the medical and aerospace industries.
