Pune, Maharashtra, India

When it comes to H&R Block it is not only about a seamless tax filing[PP1]  and a stellar client experience. As a responsible corporate citizen, H&R Block realizes that true success lies in giving something back to the society that gives it the resources to excel. CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) is hence rightfully a part of the company culture.

H&R Block has been globally involved in CSR activities across USA, Canada and Australia by conducting drives where they have donated food, grains, money and funded higher education for students that have added value to the lives of the communities of which they have been a part. H&R Block, India is also involved in CSR activities whereby it intends to help brighten up the lives of school children using sports as a medium.

A step in this direction is the partnership of H&R Block[PP2]  with Just For Kicks, an NGO[PP3]  that is involved in development of school kids from economically backward classes through sport – football. JFK has a vision that by 2025, 1 million children will play organized sport in school, developing life skills to succeed socially and professionally, while leading healthier lives. Their model involves working with children when they begin school and work towards child retention, life skills development, fitness improvement, and ultimately – academic success too.

As a part of the initiative, H&R Block has sponsored football teams, their employees have been attending practice sessions to encourage kids and also been mentoring kids through personal interactions. The HR Leader, Shivgauri Rajan who is the lead in this initiative shares her experience from the introductory session with the JFK kids. She says, “The children were extremely smart & witty, participative and full of energy. They were a welcome change to our round the clock corporate lives. Their confidence and dedication to the game were inspiring and also reinforces on the aspect of how sports can have a positive impact on our personality & growth. JFK’s way of teaching life skills through football is a unique way in contributing towards building confident & intelligent individuals.”

Corporate social responsibility is all about realizing that the resources a corporate entity uses need to be replenished and returned to the society in some or the other form. CSR has to be a sustainable initiative so that it contributes towards the long term betterment for generations to come. H&R Block realizes this and is hence working with JFK to contribute towards a bright future for kids.

Along these principles H&R Block has made an earnest attempt to be a part of the development of the children at JFK. These efforts will culminate into children getting to learn team building, life lessons, exposure to corporate life (through the talk sessions that H&R Block will have with them) and of course learning a new sport which is more than an achievement and a mission for H&R Block.
The Managing Director of H&R Block, India, Rohan Parikh is himself closely associated and involved with this activity. He explains that, “JFK was the obvious choice since children are the future of this country and we wanted to choose an organization that enriches the lives of the next generation.  JFK combines sports with practical life lesson skills and team building. Giving back to the community is engrained in the corporate culture at H&R Block.  For the past 60 years H&R Block has given back to the communities in which it operates and we are excited and privileged to sponsor and partner with Just For Kicks.”

Just as CSR helps in building a better and sustainable community life for generations to come, tax paying can go a long way in contributing towards nation building. H&R Block has always encouraged people to pay and file their taxes on time. Tax Pledge[PP4]  is a series of videos and posts that has been developed by H&R Block, to create awareness and urge people to pay taxes and contribute to a better society. Through awareness drives like Tax Pledge and the JFK partnership, H&R Block intends to be an integral part of creating a sustainable future for the community.
