Bangalore, Karnataka, India

  • Ola and the Indian Red Cross Society come together enabling citizens to add years to lives of people by donating blood
  • Ola will give customers a free ride to go and donate blood in the cities of Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad with just a tap on the Ola app

This World Blood Donor Day, Ola, India’s leading mobile app for personal transportation is offering citizens a chance to donate blood in association with the Indian Red Cross Society.  This initiative will enable anyone from Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad to use their Ola app to head to the city’s Red Cross Blood Donation camp for free! Every day, thousands of people around the world need blood transfusions to survive. The reasons for transfusion vary but the demand for blood is ever-present and growing.

Customers just need to tap on the ‘Donate’ icon in the Ola app, which will appear on June 14, 2015 [World Blood Donor Day] in Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad. Customers can hit the icon (just like they do to book a cab), and get free cab ride to go and donate blood at specific Red Cross camps in their city.

Anand Subramanian, Director – Marketing Communications, Ola said, “Blood donation is a noble cause and every blood donor is essentially a life saver. Through this joint initiative with Red Cross, we are giving access to millions of customers who use the Ola app, to do their bit by donating blood with a few taps on their smartphones this World Blood Donor Day! The Indian Red Cross Society has been leading the way in health and humanitarian efforts in India and it is our privilege to be associated with them. We urge citizens to take advantage of this initiative and come forward to make a meaningful contribution by donating.”

Basrur Rajeev Shetty, Chairman, Indian Red Cross Society, Karnataka State Branch said,We are very happy to associate with Ola for this noble cause. Active participation in blood donation can save thousands of lives every year. According to a 2012 World Health Organization (WHO) report, only nine million units of blood are collected annually, while the need is for 12 million units. Ola is making it easier for anyone with intent to donate blood by taking care of their transportation hassles. We expect to see active participation from the Ola user community and citizens at large, this World Blood Donor Day.”
