SABIC organized its annual blood donation drive across India to mark ‘World Blood Donor Day’ on June 14, collecting 1,403 units of blood as of 3.30 pm today. The initiative brought together people in six cities — Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi-Gurgaon, Mumbai, Pune and Vadodara to address the issue of shortfall of blood in the country.
SABIC, in collaboration with local NGO partners, set up blood donation camps near its offices across the six cities to encourage its employees and those from neighboring companies, as well as residents in the vicinity to donate blood and save lives.
“We all know of someone whose life was saved by a kind blood donor at a critical time of dire need. Blood is a gift that everyone can give and is in huge demand across the country. What SABIC is doing today is an active way of helping people in need by enabling blood donations through easy access. I am humbled and grateful to see that so many people have come forward to pledge their support to this life-saving cause. I am also thankful to the SABIC employees across our seven offices in India for their collective volunteering effort for the third consecutive year to help make donating blood easier by extending the blood donation drive from a one-day activity to five days,” remarked Janardhanan Ramanujalu, Vice President, SABIC South Asia & ANZ.
According to World Health Organization estimates, India needs a minimum of 12 million units of blood to meet its basic requirement[1], with Delhi/NCR alone facing an annual shortage of 100,000 units of blood[2]. Blood donations help meet only about 75 percent of the national requirement[3]. The ‘World Blood Donor Day’ sanctioned by World Health Organization, is held every year on June 14 to raise awareness on the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank blood donors for their voluntary blood donation.
SABIC firmly believes in acting responsibly, encouraging and supporting healthy and resilient communities in the regions where it operates. The blood donation drive, which is a key community-focused initiative now in its third year, is held annually in SABIC offices across the country where employees donate blood and rally support to save lives. The 2015 blood donation camp in Gurgaon was a five-day-long initiative held in collaboration with DLF Foundation and BloodConnect. The initiative witnessed wide participation from both working professionals and local residents at various camp locations in DLF Cyber City. All SABIC blood donation camps were supported by a dedicated team of qualified and trained professionals who followed stringent screening procedures and ‘Good Laboratory Practices’ for collecting, processing and testing of blood, as well as carefully documented the required details of all donors.
Ritesh Kumar Sinha, Associate Director, DLF Foundation, said, “DLF Foundation is delighted to collaborate once again with SABIC to drive awareness about a critical public interest issue in India. We are proud to see professionals and residents of Gurgaon turning up in large numbers to support this event.”
Utkarsh Kawatra, co-founder, BloodConnect, said, “We strongly believe in the potential of blood donation drives in mobilizing people towards the cause; it is also the fastest way to solving the problem of blood shortage in India. We are delighted to work with SABIC and DLF Foundation to give an opportunity to busy professionals to take some time out to help save lives.”
This countrywide ‘Blood donation drive’ was organized for the third consecutive year in addition to SABIC’s ongoing corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities in India, spanning the areas of education, environment, healthcare and community development. SABIC’s various CSR activities include the plastic recycling, partnering with the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET) for skill development in plastics processing collaboration, restoration of Lake and sponsorship of a community hall in Hosahalli village near Bengaluru, tree plantation, restructuring and renovation of schools in Bengaluru and Baroda and education drives etc.
