In a unique coincidence and perhaps for the first time ever, five grieving families agreed to donate the organs of their beloved brain dead relatives resulting in a remarkable act of humanity in the toughest situation setting a record for the maximum no. of organs harvested in a day.
Apollo Hospitals, Asia’s foremost healthcare service provider, harvested 23 different organs from these five donors and conducted ten transplants in a day at their flagship Hospital on Greams Road on Monday. A case of extreme gesture of kindness displayed by five strong families who came forward to donate the organs of their loved ones, incidentally on the same evening, enabled this feat to give a fresh lease of life to 23 people.
Dr. J. Radhakrishnan – Health Secretary, Government of Tamilnadu came forward to participate at a small function organised at the Hospital to express gratitude towards the five bereaving families. Also present at the event were Founder & Chairman of Apollo Hospitals Dr Reddy, Vice chairperson, Ms Preetha Reddy and the entire clinical team who helped realise this meticulously conducted feat.
Addressing the gathering Dr Reddy said “Today, these well-meaning families have helped give people in end-stage organ failure, a second chance to live – and in the act will inspire more people to donate organs. TN has the most successful organ donation program running and the Government has done a lot to make people aware of Organ Donation – and this one act of 5 families testifies the efforts put in by the State and the medical fraternity. However, it takes an extreme sense of human kindness and an elevated sense of social responsibility from families to help hospitals and doctors to give a fresh lease of life to those in need. Human life is priceless, and when an individual’s life can give life and hope to so many others in need, it is truly priceless!”
A multidisciplinary team of doctors and support staff have worked round the clock to help realise this remarkable feat, adding yet another feather to the Apollo Group’s success in running the busiest and most successful transplant centre in the world.
To sum up, if only the extreme kindness exhibited by these 5 families, in donating the organs of their beloved ones, were to be a torch-bearer for others to follow, it will mean that a lot more patients who are in end-stage organ failure and who are in dire need of organs, would benefit with a fresh lease of life!

From five brain dead donors, 10 kidneys, 3 pairs of cornea (total of 6 cornea), 2 hearts and 5 livers were harvested:
- 5 liver were done at Apollo
- 1 heart at Apollo and 1 heart at Fortis
- 4 kidneys at Apollo
- 4 kidneys sent to KGH, Coimbatore
- 1 kidney sent to Kamakshi Hospital
- 1 kidney sent to Global Hospital
- 6 cornea sent to Sankara Nethralaya
