Recently in Thane, Olympic Gold Medalist in Air-Rifle Shooting, Suma Shirur was awarded the prestigious ‘Shiv Gaurav Puraskar’ which was handed by Governor of Maharashtra, Dr. C Vidyasagar Rao. Suma’s high caliber and passion for her sport has made her one of the finest women air-rifle shooters the country has produced. Suma’s career took off in the year 1995 and her passion and talent for the sport has led to her being part of the Indian Shooting team for about 2 decades now. Suma is ranking amongst the top 4 in the Women’s category for Indian Air Rifle Shooting. Arjuna Awardee, Suma has represented India at the recently conducted ISSF Shooting World Cup in Changwon Korea (8-12 April) .  By virtue of her ranking, she is one of the Olympic probables as per NRAI's latest selection policy. The final Olympic team will be decided at the end of the year based on the performances of shooters over the upcoming various international and national competitions.
 

Suma’s most recent achievement includes her first place in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle at Vattiyurkava Shooting Range in Kerala, scoring 209.7 (415.5). This year, in the month of February, she won the silver-medal at the Inter-shoot Annual International Shooting Championship for Air Pistol and Air Rifle which was held in The Hague, Netherlands.  Suma aims high to achieve great success at the 4 ISSF Shooting World Cups, first one being in Korea, followed by USA, Germany and Azerbaijan.
 
Suma created a sensation in February 2004 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, by becoming the first Indian Shooter to create a world record at the Asian Shooting Championship by equaling the world record of 400/400 and winning Gold for India. Later that year at the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, Suma stormed into the finals of the 10-metre Air Rifle event .Suma made her name at the international stage winning medals at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan and Commonwealth Games in Manchester, where she won medals in the individual and team events of 10-metre Air Rifle. In 2003, Suma was bestowed with the coveted ‘Arjuna Award’, by the then President of India, A P J Abdul Kalam. In 2005, she was adjudged the ‘Sportswoman of the Year’ award by Hero India Sports Awards.
