HackerEarth, a Bangalore based start-up which is democratizing technical recruitment, today announced the winners of the International Women’s Day Hackathon which was conducted from March 6th – March 8th. In a world’s first, the women’s only hackathon attracted more than 10,000 women from across the world. The three day coding marathon saw 7,314 participants from India and 34 different countries build products around the themes of productivity, fun, social welfare and retail.
The winners of the International Women’s Day Hackathon are Sonakshi Nathani and Lavanya Arora from Hyderabad who topped the list. The second and third winners are Siya Kakodhar from Mumbai and Aishwarya Deshmukh and Sonia Gupta from Pune respectively.
The hackathon had close to 2000 submissions from all over the world. Major participation came from India, USA, UK, Eastern European countries and South East Asian countries. Over 70% the submissions were web based, while close to 30% were mobile applications. Around 87% of the participants were working professionals and 10% were students. Most of the submissions were around the social welfare theme, where maximum number of applications addressed women security. However, 2 out of the top three submissions were applications that made retail and shopping better.
The winners were announced today at a special “Women in Technology” conference conducted by HackerEarth in Bangalore. The focus of the event was to highlight and discuss the problems faced by women in the technology industry. Women leaders from SnapDeal, Walmart Labs, Harman, Thoughtworks, Altimetrik, Akamai, SanDisk, Capillary, HCL, EMC and AT&T engaged in panel discussions and enthralled the audience with powerful and inspiring keynotes. The top 10 submissions also got a chance to pitch their products in front of a panel of judges and the audience.
