- Samsung Technical School will train young women with industry-ready skills
- Initiative a part of Samsung’s national efforts to create pool of talented workforce with hands-on experience
Samsung Electronics India will set up Samsung Technical School at Women’s Industrial Training Institute (ITI), Dighaghat in Patna in collaboration with Directorate General of Employment and Training, Labour Resource Department, Government of Bihar.
The Samsung Technical School is part of Samsung’s corporate citizenship initiatives in India and aims to create a pool of talented workforce to support the burgeoning growth of the consumer electronics and mobile phones segments in the country. The Technical School will run Samsung’s Advanced Repair and Industrial Skills Enhancement (A.R.I.S.E.) program, providing students trade-specific training on various aspects of repair and troubleshooting for consumer electronics products such as mobile phones, televisions, home theatres and home appliances. Students will also get real time working experience at Samsung authorised service centres. Other than technical skills, as part of the course the students will get a chance to learn soft skills which will further enable them to provide exemplary customer service.
Mr. Rajiv Mishra Vice President, Media & Spokesperson and Head of CSR Initiatives of Samsung India, said, “
Samsung believes in the power of technology in shaping a future that opens new possibilities for people everywhere. Over the last year, we have collaborated with central and state governments to open Samsung Technical Schools, to provide youth with the opportunity to gain skills that make them industry-ready, and the choice of many employment avenues. We are confident that with the Samsung A.R.I.S.E. program training, these students will complement India’s vision to be a global manufacturing hub.” The A.R.I.S.E. training at the Samsung Technical School will last three months with graduates getting an opportunity to be placed in the consumer electronics servicing industry post evaluation. The first batch at the Samsung Technical School in the Women’s ITI, Patna, will begin training soon.
The proposed MoU with the government of Bihar will be the latest of Samsung’s partnerships with the State to address the critical need for a large pool of talented manpower with practical know-how and relevant industry experience in India. In August 2014, Samsung signed an MoU with the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Government of India to set up ten Technical Schools at MSME Technology Centres across India. The first School was inaugurated at MSME Extension Centre in New Delhi in August 2014, followed by the second one at the Central Institute of Tool Design, Hyderabad. Samsung has also established one Technical School lab at the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) at Dheerpur, Delhi and four Technical School labs in West Bengal in collaboration with the Department of Training and Technical Education, with plans to open more labs across India. 150 students have graduated from the Samsung Technical Schools in Delhi and Kolkata to date, with over half of them receiving employment offers at Samsung Service Partners, while the remaining will be considered for additional positions as and when they come up. Additionally, Samsung launched ‘Guru Shiksha’, a training program to teach ITI teachers on the A.R.I.S.E. program, in early 2014.
Samsung has, over the years, leveraged its legacy of technology innovation through philanthropic initiatives focused on helping communities lead healthier, smarter and more sustainable lives. In addition to skill development among youth, Samsung also places substantial focus on providing underprivileged children a chance at quality education and in helping bridge the digital gap that exists in India. This is done through Samsung Smart Schools, set up in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas across the length and breadth of the country. The Smart Classes are equipped with an interactive Samsung whiteboard, Samsung laptops for the students, a printer, wi-fi and a power backup since power outages are common. Over 198 Smart Schools have been set up to date in India, benefitting 75,000 secondary class students. Samsung continues to expand the program based on positive feedback received from the schools on the impact on students learning and attendance.
