British Council convenes Panel Discussion on Quality Standards in English Language Education

New Delhi, Delhi, India

The British Council has done extensive work in helping to raise the standards of English language education across the world.  Wherever we work we aim to help raise standards in the quality of the teaching and learning of English.

Our work ranges from teaching, teacher training and development, to corporate and government consultancy, examinations and assessment. We have our own Teaching Quality Standards for our Teaching Centres and we run  ‘AccreditationUK’, an accreditation scheme for institutions offering English language programmes of study in the UK.

Through our new collaborative initiative, the English Language Quality Standards Programme, we aim to advance the debate about quality standards in English language education in India, in particular working in partnership with private sector schools, higher education institutes and vocational training providers.

To take a step in this direction, the British Council convened key stakeholders to a Panel Discussion held on 30 Jan. The theme of the panel discussion was ‘Quality Standards in English Language Education’.

The panel was a varied mix of stakeholders, chaired by John Knagg, Senior Advisor Learning and Teaching, British Council, UK.

Ashok Pandey, Principal of the well-known Ahlcon International School spoke about the attributes that a quality provider of English Language education have. Keith Morrow, Senior Inspector AccreditationUK discussed how these attributes can be measured.

Sadhana Parashar, Director CBSE discussed the importance of quality assurance in private versus public sector institutions.  Technological developments have enhanced quality delivery in education, and this was brought to fore by Isabel Sutcliffe, International Standards and Quality Director, Pearson Education (India). William Bickerdike, Regional Manager, Cambridge International Examinations pointed out the role of examinations in providing quality.

Chris Brandwood, Director English South Asia, British Council spoke of the British Council’s commitment towards working with Indian and global stakeholders in raising standards in English language education in India. He said, “It is a privilege to host this event at the British Council today, and to welcome Indian and UK partners to join a debate which is so relevant to the global demand for quality English language learning and teaching. There are no simple answers and the challenges faced in the English language field, whether in Europe or Asia are something of key importance for practitioners and policy makers alike”

The event was attended by Principals and administrators of leading schools and universities, Education providers, Indian and UK government officials and representatives from various quality assurance and accreditation bodies in India.
