Canon's New PowerShot SX500 IS and PowerShot SX160 IS Present Super Optical Zoom Capabilities in its Most Compact form Factor
New Delhi, Delhi, India, Wednesday, September 12, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- Canon India Pvt Ltd., India's No. 1 Complete Digital Imaging Company, has launched PowerShot SX500 IS and PowerShot SX160 IS. Both PowerShot cameras carry the latest in Canon's zoom lens technology, built into two newly designed slim bodies that are easy to tote, grip and zoom in on the action. These 16-megapixel powerhouses also have a host of other functions to make them ideal cameras for any occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Alok Bharadwaj, Senior Vice President, Canon India, said, "At Canon, it has always been our endeavour to push the limits of technology and offer something new and innovative that excites the customers. In photography people always compete with themselves to aspire to use skills in creating finest pictures. With new introductions, we help and facilitate the best use of technology for out of the world experience."
Seiji Hamanishi, Assistant Director, Imaging Communication Products Division, Canon India added, "Canon has yet again launched the first of its kind product in India. PowerShot SX500 IS is the world's lightest* 30x super-zoom camera with a new 30x (24 - 720mm) optical zoom lens. Canon has always promoted photography as a culture and that is our ultimate aim. People today, are extremely creative and take pictures to preserve. They treat it as a form of an art and to compliment this Canon has launched two cameras which shall enable users to zoom in and take impactful photos."
The super-zoom PowerShot SX500 IS has a new 30x (24 - 720mm) optical zoom lens, the world's lightest* 30x super-zoom camera, while the PowerShot SX160 IS carries a 16x (28 - 448mm) optical zoom lens. With versatile lenses like these, users will be able to shoot wide-angle group shots in tight spaces like restaurants, or the other extreme of long-distance telephoto shots. This makes these cameras extremely useful for shooting wildlife - where the subject is typically very far away, or even bird photography - where the subject is extremely small. In such scenarios, typical compact cameras will only be able to capture images where the main subject fills only a small fraction of the frame.
More stable zoom
While zooming in at maximum distance, it is easy to lose your subject as the frame gets tight. Enter Canon's new Zoom Assist Seek function in the PowerShot SX500 IS - by pressing the Zoom Assist Seek button, the camera will instantly zoom out to its widest view to help the user find the subject again. To further aid the framing process, a white rectangular guide appears in the LCD to show the user what the framing will be like on the previous zoom setting. Once the user has relocated and properly framed the subject within the rectangular guide, releasing the seek button will direct the lens to its previous zoom position. The zoom can also be adjusted while the seek button is pressed, and the fully-animated framing guide will adjust itself to indicate the new zoom's frame.
Another function that Canon has further developed in the PowerShot SX500 IS and PowerShot SX160 IS to aid with high-zoom photos is Intelligent IS. Image stabilization is all the more crucial in high-zoom cameras especially when zoomed all the way in. Intelligent IS detects situations like zoom position and shooting distance to accurately counter against camera shake, thereby stabilizing the lens and helping users shoot crisp and clear photos.
Maximum zoom, minimum bulk
Canon also redesigned the bodies of its new SX series for better ergonomics and portability. The bodies have been made slimmer, with the corners trimmed and rounded to fit naturally into the palm of your hand. The front and rear grips are now angled so that users no longer need to bend their wrists as much when holding the camera, ensuring a natural grip and greater comfort.
The PowerShot SX500 IS and PowerShot SX160 IS are both powered by Canon's speedy DIGIC 4 image processor which, together with the 16-megapixel CCD sensor, creates images with rich color gradations and crisp details. The auto-focus (AF) performance of the PowerShot SX500 IS and PowerShot SX160 IS has been made even more nimble with improved AF algorithms, improved data-reading speed from the image sensor, and revised sequences.
The result of these improvements is a faster AF speed, which means that the lag between the time a user presses the shutter button and the moment the camera finishes focusing and snaps, is greatly reduced - the time-lag clocked for the PowerShot SX500 IS is approximately 0.30 seconds, and 0.29 seconds for the PowerShot SX160 IS. With reduced time-lag, users will be able to capture the exact moment they desire for their photos.
Shoot better movies in HD
The versatility of the PowerShot SX500 IS and PowerShot SX160 IS extends beyond still photography, and includes videos too. With the power of the DIGIC 4 processor, these two cameras are able to shoot videos at sharp HD resolutions. They are also equipped with stereo microphones for superior audio capturing.
The Intelligent IS function that stabilizes the lenses for still photos is effective in video mode too. Close up shots obviously benefit from Intelligent IS, but more importantly, panning and walking shots will also come out smoother than ever.
