Riverbed and VMware Preview LAN Performance for Distributed VMware View® Environments
VMworld Showcase Highlights VMware Branch Office Desktop and Business Process Desktop Solutions to Maximize VDI Performance over Wide Area Networks; Preserves Control in the Data Center

San Francisco, United States, Thursday, August 30, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD), the performance company, today announced a solution preview at VMworld® 2012 in partnership with VMware that demonstrates high performance remote and branch office deployments of VMware View®. The technology preview will showcase the delivery of local area networks (LAN) performance in distributed VMware View environments, including Branch Office Desktop (BOD) and Business Process Desktop (BPD) solutions, while preserving control in the data center. The showcase combines Riverbed® GraniteT edge virtual server infrastructure (edge-VSI) with VMware View. This industry first builds on the August 2011 announcement to partner with Teradici to better address IT infrastructure performance problems, including virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) environments.

Inherent performance challenges with the wide area network (WAN), including distance, latency, limited and costly bandwidth, and unforeseeable outages, can result in a poor experience for the user of interactive applications and other IT services. Even with sufficient bandwidth, the challenges of too much latency or outages over the WAN can lead to poor application performance and the inability to smoothly deliver virtual services at remote locations.

VMware and Riverbed will showcase a combined solution that significantly reduces the effect of WAN latency, dramatically reducing the need for high-cost bandwidth and ensuring continuous operations in the event of a WAN outage. The combined solution delivers a high quality experience for VMware View users while at the same time reducing the operational and management costs for remote and branch offices.

"With the growing popularity of virtual desktops that offer new levels of flexibility and control to the enterprise, a key factor in judging the success of the deployment is end user satisfaction," said Joe Skorupa, vice president, distinguished analyst at Gartner. "Virtual desktop infrastructures are fundamentally challenging enterprises to rethink how they deliver applications and services to end users. To be successful, IT organizations must be able to assure end users that they can do their jobs as effectively as when they had a full desktop client."

Enabling Successful VDI Adoption

Finding a cost-effective and reliable way to manage end users in the branch office has become a priority for many organizations. A growing number of organizations view the centralization and management of branch environments through desktop virtualization as an effective approach to streamline desktop and application management while reducing costs, improving security, meeting regulatory requirements, and increasing flexibility and productivity.

Enterprises have invested in larger and more costly redundant WAN connections, which may not provide end users with a consistent experience as interactive applications can still perform poorly over distance. In addition, local print and application servers that are not centralized with desktops in the data center can slow end user access to applications and data.

"VMware View offers our employees a secure method to access their applications, share data, and collaborate over great distances; and the IT team maintains its ability to centrally manage desktops to streamline IT operations," said Tim Lewis, vice president of business development, at Itex, Inc., a Canada-based supplier and integrator of advanced information technology infrastructure. "The innovative approach by Riverbed and VMware promises to safeguard against events that we cannot control-like WAN outages-and deliver LAN performance in our distributed computing environment."

100% Consolidation and LAN Performance at the Edge

Edge-VSI, enabled by the Riverbed Granite appliance, allows organizations to consolidate and manage all edge servers in the data center. Edge-VSI extends centrally managed data to distributed end users, enabling IT to fully consolidate branch servers, virtual desktops, applications, and end user data to the data center, yet deliver services such as VDI to the edge as if they were local. With the VMware View BOD solution, organizations can centrally provision, manage, protect and project VMware View desktops to the branch for local connectivity - all at a lower total cost of ownership. This preview will demonstrate how organizations are enabled to maximize uptime, streamline desktop management and drive down operational costs.

The VMware View BPD solution provides the same benefits as the enhanced VMware View BOD solution but further extends high-speed performance for VDI by delivering desktops as a managed service to contact center agents, offshore developers and outsourced workers. The enhanced BPD solution with edge-VSI and VMware View enables organizations to achieve complete control and consolidation and lowers infrastructure cost while giving end users a highly responsive computing experience across networks and locations.

"Organizations that want virtual desktop solutions to simplify deployment, improve security and manage IT more efficiently depend on VMware View," said Vittorio Viarengo, vice president, end-user computing, at VMware. "By furthering our partnership with Riverbed, we will deliver a solution that can provide a consistent experience to end users over any distance, allowing organizations to realize the full benefit of VMware View environments, while enabling reliable performance, efficiency and productivity - all at a lower cost."

"Enterprises demand LAN performance regardless of where their IT infrastructure, data or end users are located," said John Martin, senior vice president, product management, at Riverbed. "This collaborative effort by Riverbed and VMware helps organizations provide users with a seamless experience when accessing their desktop, applications and data by accelerating performance regardless of location."
