Pune, Maharashtra, India, Wednesday, May 23, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) --

The Dakshana Foundation is pleased to announce that its fourth batch of JNV Dakshana Scholars did exceeding well in the IIT-JEE 2012. A total of 110 Dakshana Scholars were prepped for free by Dakshana for two years at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Of these 73 qualified in the IIT-JEE merit list - a 66% success rate!

For the first time, Dakshana gave preference to disabled scholars. All the Dakshana toppers are either missing or have severely compromised lower limbs. Rahul Patidar, with an All India IIT-JEE OBC PD rank of 2, hales from Mandsaur district in Madhya Pradesh. Both his parents dropped out in 8th grade and eke out under $50/month in income from farming. Scheduled Caste scholar Shiv Kumar is from Patna in Bihar. He has no lower limbs. His mother is illiterate and father is a security guard making under $200/month. We salute Rahul and Shiv along with all our Dakshana scholars for their diligence and perseverance.

About 3% of the over 500,000 students who attempted the IIT-JEE were successful. Dakshana had a hit rate of 66%. "It is all the more remarkable because large swaths of our scholars come from remote rural areas and the weakest sections of society with mostly illiterate parents."

Since 2007, a total of 344 (out of 824) of our gifted scholars have cracked the IIT-JEE. Two out of every five Dakshana Scholars has been accepted as an IITian. The Dakshana-JNV partnership is all about creating a level playing field where brilliant students from rural, impoverished families can reach their full potential.

Dakshana has invested nearly $4 Million since 2007 towards the alleviation of poverty. Dakshana is focused on providing world-class education opportunities for exceptionally gifted children from impoverished backgrounds in India. Every Dakshana Scholar who gets a world-class education successfully breaks the shackles of poverty for his entire family - permanently.
