Mittal Champion Ronjan Sodhi becomes World No. 1 in Double Trap Shooting
Two successive title wins at World Cups catapult Sodhi to top

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Monday, August 01, 2011 -- (Business Wire India) -- Ace Indian shooter Ronjan Sodhi today earned world's top spot in double trap shooting, as announced by the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) when releasing their latest rankings. Until recently, Mittal Champion Sodhi was ranked number 2 in the world and number 1 in Asia in the double trap category.

Over the past few years Mittal Champion Ronjan Sodhi has consistently won major international competitions. His recent successes include setting a new world record and winning a gold medal at the ISSF World Cup in 2010 followed by a title win at the Shotgun World Cup. These two wins are instrumental in Ronjan's pursuit of the top spot. In the recently concluded Delhi Commonwealth Games 2010, Ronjan had won two Silver medals and closed the year with a Gold medal in the Asian Games. The World No. 1 double trap shooter is now focusing on the forthcoming Olympic Games. Commenting on his intensive training schedule, Ronjan said, "For London 2012, I am working on mental conditioning to ensure consistency as competitive sports at the Olympic level is a lot about focus, concentration and nerves. I am fortunate to receive comprehensive support from the Mittal Champions Trust. They have supported me since the initial days of my professional career and the results are there for all to see. Together with world class experts I am determined to work hard towards an Olympic Gold."

On Ronjan's success, Mr Amit Bhatia, Founder, Mittal Champions Trust said, "Ronjan is one of India's finest talents. We are proud of his achievements and are committed to walk with him on his journey to an Olympic Gold. This is a great moment for sports in India and we have every faith that Ronjan will make us proud at London 2012."

The ISSF world ranking system is based on two key factors of the shooting performance. It includes beside the placing (rank) of the shooter also the result achieved by the shooters in the 15 Olympic shooting events at ISSF supervised championships and competitions. In the last 15 years, only five shooters have shot world records or equaled the same; Mittal Champion Sodhi is one of them.

Ronjan has been a Mittal Champion since 2007. He has already qualified for the 2012 London Olympics and is one of India's strongest medal prospects.

About Mittal Champions Trust

The Mittal Champions Trust (MCT) is an initiative to develop world-class sports in India. The idea was born at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, where Mr. Lakshmi N. Mittal and Mr. Amit Bhatia did not find any Indian athlete to cheer for. Consequently, the trust was launched to identify talented athletes across India and provide them the best of training and infrastructure to win medals on the world stage, especially at the London Olympics in 2012. MCT believes that India has the potential to produce world class champions at sports, and, with this belief, the trust endeavors to help athletes overcome all financial, physical and training constraints, while improving and perfecting their performance.

MCT currently endorses 5 Olympic sports: Archery, Wrestling, Shooting, Athletics and Boxing. MCTs pool of athletes has been selected by a panel of eminent sportspersons each associated with a particular sport. The panel identifies athletes from all levels - district, state and national, with the potential to succeed at the international level. MCT's experts have developed tailor made programs for each athlete as per their individual requirements. The best possible training, equipment, advice on fitness and nutrition, mental conditioning, physiotherapy has been made available to the athletes. Additionally, athletes are also provided with the opportunity to train at best training centres of the world with internationally renowned experts. The archers were trained by the Korean coach, Mr. Lee Wang Woo, who has coached four Olympic gold medallists in the past. The boxers trained in Cuba, Kazakhstan and South Africa while the wrestlers have trained in the top training centers in Russia, Georgia and United States. MCT also rehabilitates injured athletes thereby prolonging their international career.

The story of MCT athletes is also a story of triumph of human spirit over circumstances. Majority of MCT athletes have come from challenging socio-economic backgrounds. Comprehensive support provided by MCT helped bridge this gap and inspired the athletes to believe in themselves and overcome limitations imposed by their circumstances.

MCTs contribution and investment in its athletes has already reflected in their performance starting with Abhinav Bindra, who won India's first gold in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. In the 2010 Asian Games at Guangzhou, China, MCT athletes won 3 gold, 5 Silver and 8 bronze medals. Prior to this, at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, MCT athletes won 7 gold, 7 silver and 2 bronze medals. MCT is confident that the athletes are well prepared and confident for a podium finish at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. We are proud to be associated with these champions in their quest to bring sporting glory to India.
