Danieli Corus Bags 1700 crore Order from NMDC
New Delhi, Delhi, India, Wednesday, June 01, 2011 -- (Business Wire India) -- Danieli Corus, a global leader in Iron Making technology, signed a contract with NMDC for the design & supply of the largest Blast Furnace in India.
The blast furnace will be NMDC's first and India's largest to date.
Dr. Bala Paramanathan, a senior technologist from the Danieli Corus head office in The Netherlands, described this contract as a major step forwards towards meeting India's ambitious plans to expand its steelmaking capacity to over 100 Mt/yr in the near future. NMDC has ordered the largest Blast Furnace in the country so far (4506 m3inner volume) on Danieli Corus, producing around 33 lakhs tonnes of iron per year, which equates to a production of 55 lakhs of cars every year. This will meet NMDC's entire requirement of hot metal for its Phase-1 steel production.
The blast furnace will be built at Nagarnar in Jagdalpur district of Chhattisgarh in 33 months with the help of Tata Projects and Danieli Corus' Indian subsidiary. The consortium is already building a 4060 m3 blast furnace for SAIL's Rourkela Steel Plant, which is in an advanced stage of construction.
Danieli Corus has been active in India for several years, having built a series of blast furnaces for companies like JSW Bellary, JSPL Raigarh and Bhushan Steel Angul. As per Gajendra Panwar, MD India Operations, the JSPL Raigarh Blast furnace, in operation for the last five years, is the best operating furnace in the country. Danieli Corus is expanding operations in India, riding on the wave of many projects, the latest being the largest NMDC blast furnace.
The blast furnace technology is the oldest means of making Iron having passed the test of time and accepted as the most economical route for large-scale production of high strength, high deformability steel. State-of-the-art automation features, low fuel rates and advanced pollution control measures translate into improved overall economics and reduced carbon footprints.
Metallurgical coal for making coke, the prime material for iron making, is scarce and expensive. To overcome this constraint, Danieli Corus has mastered the cutting-edge pulverized coal injection (PCI) technology capable of injecting 250 kg/t of pulverized non-metallurgical coal continuously into the Blast Furnace - a significant feature adopted for the NMDC furnace. As against this, the present Indian coal injection rate varies between 75 and 150 kg/t.
Danieli Corus, with its headquarters in The Netherlands, is expanding its operation in India. It has built blast furnaces all over the world with many record making feats with its copper plate cooling technology ensuring the campaign life of the blast furnace exceeding 20 years. Danieli Corus has worked with all major players in the Indian steel industry, both public and private.
Peter Zonneveld, Managing Director of the group and a well-known name in the Industry, has closely observed the progress of the Indian steel industry over his frequent visits to India during the last 25 years. He feels it is only matter of time that India will become the second largest steel producer after China.
Gajendra Panwar, MD India Operations, feels that the Indian Steel Industry, which has had a steady growth of above 9% over last five years, will continue to do so in the next decade as well, the steel production having more than doubled over the last decade.
It is indeed heartening to note that NMDC has been able to fast-track its Nagarnar project whereas other large/mega projects are yet to take off for some reason or other.
