ITC Maurya, Taj Hotels, and DSIIDC lend support to Akshaya Patra in this initiative

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Friday, May 20, 2011 -- (Business Wire India) -- Akshaya Patra Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that feeds over 1.2 million underprivileged children, has been given financial support of `3.54 lakh by Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (DSIIDC) to feed homeless people in Delhi under the 'Aap Ki Rasoi programme', a part of the government's 'Bhagidari' (public-private partnership) initiative.

Currently, out of 13 'Aap Ki Rasoi' centres, Akshaya Patra serves meals at 5 locations in the city including Rabhubirnagar, Karol bagh, Shahadara, Mangol Puri, and Yamuna Bazaar.

Recently, DSIIDC, headed by Sri. Ramakanth Goswami, Hon'ble Minister of Industries, issued a cheque of `3,54,900/- to the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Delhi - Ms. Sheila Dixit, as first installment to implement the scheme. Ms. Dixit handed over the contribution by DSIIDC to the Akshaya Patra Foundation, for feeding 300 homeless people of Delhi everyday near Shahdara Metro Station, New Delhi. Besides DSIIDC, ITC Maurya and Taj Hotels have committed their support to sponsor meals at Rabhubirnagar and Karol Bagh respectively.

Sri Chanchalapathi Dasa, Vice Chairman of Akshaya Patra Foundation says, "A healthy society, where every citizen feels secure is most important for the health of a nation. A nation cannot progress until the problems of the society are addressed. We are happy to be a part of the Aap Ki Rasoi program to feed the homeless. Our Endeavour is to expand and grow this program to feed many more homeless and underprivileged people in Delhi, so that they can work hard and earn a decent living for themselves, so that we will not have any homeless in our country's capital."

'Aap Ki Rasoi programme' was launched in 2008 with an aim to provide nutritious meal to the destitute with active support from corporate sector, business houses, individuals, and religious organisations. Various private firms as well as corporate entities have been extending financial help to run the programme under which one time nutritious meal is being provided to the poor and destitute people in various areas of the city.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation (www.akshayapatra.org), a secular, non-profit organization is the world's largest mid-day meal programme in a public-private partnership with the Indian government. The Foundation is currently feeding 1.29 million underprivileged children per day in government-owned schools in eight states across India. This constitutes 1 per cent of the 120 million children that the government scheme covers - a figure very significant for one single NGO to do. Akshaya Patra's work has created very wide ranging social impact among the children of poor and marginalized communities who go to government schools in India. For some of these children, this is the only full meal they eat every day.
