India's Generation Y Vacation deprived according to the Annual Vacation Deprivation® survey carried out by Expedia India

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Tuesday, April 05, 2011 -- (Business Wire India) -- -- Results from the first-ever Indian adaptation of Expedia's Global Vacation Deprivation survey shows India's Gen Y taking fewer vacations than Western counterparts

-- Study places India as the fourth most vacation-deprived nation among 11 countries surveyed across Europe, Asia-Pacific and North America

-- Striking behavioral differences were observed between consumers in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore

India's Generation Y has emerged as the fourth most vacation deprived, according to the annual Vacation Deprivation® survey carried out by Expedia India, the world's largest online travel company. Japan led the group of vacation deprived nations followed by USA and Australia emerging as the second and third most deprived countries respectively. The survey was carried out amongst service class professionals at managerial levels and above in 11 countries in end 2010 with over 1000 respondents per country. The India survey was conducted with consumers in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.

The India results point towards an increasing tendency among young Indians to be workaholic as a means to achieve faster career growth. On an average Indians are entitled to 26 annual leave days and are able to take an average of 22 leave days annually. However, 35% of those surveyed, were not able to take more than 15 days of annual leave in a year. Japan, the most holiday-deprived nation for the second year in a row, receives on average 16.5 days annual leave. However, 94 per cent of Japanese do not take all their leave days, taking on average only 9 days of their entitled annual leave days. On the other hand, in France which ranks as the world's most holiday-rich nation, the average employee receives 37.5 annual leave days per year (and taking on average 34.5 of those days).

Only 37% Indian respondents were able to take all their vacation leaves. Over 22% Indian respondents stated that their bosses were not supportive of employees taking all of their annual leaves. Also, a lack of personal discipline among Indians (with over 50% consumers checking their official e-mails & messages during vacation), were the main reasons for spoiling their vacations.

Moreover, Indians showed greater orientation towards family holidays; over 18% respondents did not take their vacations because of their spouse or children not getting leave at the same time.

According to Manmeet Ahluwalia, Marketing Head for Expedia.co.in, "This is the first time that we have undertaken the annual Vacation Deprivation survey in India. The study provides interesting insights into the key factors discouraging most Indians from taking their vacation; lack of choice and flexibility in the holiday offers emerged as one such factor."

"We believe that our global inventory of flights, hotels and holiday activities will provide the much-needed choice to the Indian traveller. Expedia's 'Build Your Own Trip' solution further addresses the need for flexibility by allowing consumers to create their own packages, combined with bundled discount rates and the most comprehensive offerings."

The survey further delved into studying traveler attitudes and trends in the three metro cities of Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, highlighting stark differences between consumers in the three cities.

The study reveals that the average Mumbaikars is in-control of their vacations. Ahead of their counterparts in Delhi and Bangalore, 61% Mumbaikars take all of their annual leaves as per their entitlement, as compared to only 33% in the other two cities availing of their complete vacation. In fact considering the high number of vacation days availed by Mumbaikars, only 22% ever looked to claim money in lieu of the leave days that they had not been able to take, in contrast to 41%Delhiites and 32%Bangaloreans. Also only 22% of respondents in Mumbai ever cancelled their vacations for work as compared to 41% in Delhi and 32% in Bangalore. But these holidays are not always taken positively by Mumbai bosses, where only 17% Mumbaikars felt that their bosses were supportive of their subordinates taking leave. This was better as compared to only 2% in Delhi and slightly less than Bangaloreans, 25% of who found their bosses not supportive.

Delhiites on the other hand consider 'life=work', with monetary benefits being preferred over holidays. Nearly 43% Delhiites considered work as their life, while 23% of Bangaloreans and 13% Mumbaikars feel the same way. This also led to 82% Delhiites working more than 40 hours a week followed by 52% Mumbaikars and 40% Bangaloreans. More than the reaction from their boss, Delhiites are concerned about their leaves impacting their family, with 31% Delhiites feeling that taking vacation might negatively affect their spouse/partner/family member's job. Also for 39% Delhiites, children's education is the main reason for not taking vacation while only 22% Mumbaikars and 19% Bangaloreans gave the same reason. The wife emerges as the key decision maker in Delhi. 41% Delhiites want to encash their leaves. This is quite high as compared to only 32% Bangaloreans and 22% Mumbaikars. From a travel point of view, Delhiites are significantly more adventurous as compared to their counterparts in Delhi or Mumbai. Over 38% Delhiites want to try new places for their vacation followed by 34% Bangaloreans and 19% Mumbaikars.

Bangaloreans come across as more growth oriented and feel that vacations negatively impact their growth. While they work long hours, they are also never at ease while on a holiday. Only 33% Bangaloreans ever take their entire vacations and as high as 25% Bangaloreans felt that their boss is not supportive of them taking leaves followed by 17% Mumbaikars and 2% Delhiites. This also led to 32% Bangaloreans cancelling their vacation for work. Considering that fewer Bangaloreans took all their leave days, 32% of them also looked to claim money in lieu of the vacations they had not been able to take, while in Delhi this number was much higher at 41% and Mumbai was the lowest at 22%.
A large part of the Bangalore consumers were in the double-income-no-kids category whereby, only 19% Bangaloreans found children's education as the main reason for not taking their vacations. The numbers are quite high in other cities where 39% Delhiites and 22% Mumbaikars found children's education as the main reason for not taking vacation. Also only 19% Bangaloreans felt that taking vacation might negatively affect their spouse/partner/family member's job whereas 31% Delhiites and 20% Mumbaikars felt the same way.

Bangaloreans were also the most receptive in availing holiday offers online. Only 27% Bangaloreans felt hesitant to take the holiday offers because they feel offers are too long and confusing as compared to 48% Mumbaikars and nearly 57% Delhiites.
