Voluntary Certification Scheme for AYUSH a Big Hit with Ayurvedic Drug Manufacturers
First Five Ayurvedic Drug Manufacturers Qualify for Ayush Standard Mark & Ayush Premium Mark

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Friday, November 19, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- The first five Ayurvedic drug manufacturers have received the coveted Ayush Mark certificates. This was announced by the Quality Council of India, the joint owners of the Ayush Certification Scheme with the Department of AYUSH.

The certificates have been awarded to M/s. Unijules Life Sciences Ltd, Nagpur; M/s. DXN Herbal Manufacturing (India ) Pvt. Ltd, Pudicherry; M/s. Warriers Hospital & Panchakaram Centre , Ernakulam; M/s. Multani Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Roorkee; and M/s. Maharshi Ayurveda Products Ltd. Noida after rigorous scrutiny of their plant and products by an independent certification body, Foodcert India P Ltd, duly approved by the Quality Council of India for the purpose .

The Ayush Mark is a joint initiative of the Department of AYUSH, (Ministry of Health and Family Welfare) and the Quality Council of India (QCI) to encourage voluntary compliance to domestic regulations and international norms and enhance consumer confidence.

The Scheme has two levels of certification - Ayush Standard Mark which is based on compliance to the domestic regulatory requirements and Ayush Premium Mark which is broadly based on WHO GMP or GMP prescribed by any importing country and product requirements based on international norms.

As per the provisions of the scheme, any manufacturing unit can obtain a certification from a designated certification body (CB) after demonstrating compliance to the certification criteria and will be under regular surveillance of the certification body. Currently, two CBs have been approved under the Scheme - Foodcert India P. Ltd. Hyderabad and Bureau Veritas Certification India P. Ltd. Mumbai. The technical competence of such CBs would be established through the internationally recognized concept of accreditation.

The National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies (NABCB) under QCI, as the national accreditation body, is already operating a scheme for accreditation of Product Certification Bodies as per applicable international standard, ISO Guide 65, and will provide certification bodies accredited as per the applicable international standard and competent to operate the specified product certification scheme for AYUSH products. Similarly, NABL accredited labs will be used under the Scheme. These measures are designed to facilitate acceptance of the Scheme in international market in the future.
The above approach would not only promote regulatory compliance on one hand but also promote excellence by encouraging industry to aim for international standards.
The Scheme through its AYUSH Premium Mark is designed to help exporters in meeting the requirements of importing countries through the option of obtaining certification as per specific regulations of any importing country. Further, this mechanism would also serve to demonstrate to importing countries' at an appropriate time that India has a system which would deliver products meeting its regulations.

On this occasion, Dr. Giridhar J Gyani, Secretary General, Quality Council of India observed: "This is a unique initiative in the drug sector anywhere in the world and appropriately for the Indian systems of medicine designed to demonstrate that Indian Ayush sector can attain international standards."
The Ayush Standard and Premium mark have been designed and would be allowed to be used on the product/packaging by the certified manufacturers as mark of quality. The Scheme has received widespread support from the AYUSH industry and as on date, 26 manufacturers have applied to the designated CBs for certification.
