Green Growth's the Word for Great Lakers -- Jamshyd Godrej
Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, Monday, July 12, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- Business leader and Padma-Bhushan Mr. Jamshyd Godrej addressed the current batch of students at Great Lakes Institute of Management Chennai on Sunday. The early morning weekend schedule did not deter the spirits of the young Great Lakers who were eagerly waiting to interact with one of the esteemed industrialist cum environmentalists of the country.
Mr. Godrej's address prime focus revolved around sustainability and innovation being the key to conducting business. Quoting Late Prof. C.K.Pahlad's HBR article on the subject, cited examples of Nano from the house of Tatas and energy efficient products being developed at Godrej. Mr. Godrej dealt exhaustively on energy conservation and the need for sustainable growth. Impressed by the Green Campus initiatives adapted by the institute, complimenting Dean Dr. Bala Balachandran and the team he said, "Green growth is the way ahead globally and India is no exception and that India too must adapt practices that foster growth in a sustainable way."
Speaking of his own 'green commitment' legacy, he enlightened the students on setting up of CII - Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre (CII - Godrej GBC), offering advisory services to the industry and the government on environmental and sustainability aspects. He also described about how Godrej works not only on innovations in their own products to keep them environmentally efficient but also in the work environment through green campuses.
After his address, students also had a candid discussion with Mr. Godrej on several aspects of industry & growth. In reference to Triple Bottom Line (TBL) and its implications on corporate India, Mr. Godrej said that it is a reality and that sustainable growth is a challenge that can be turned into business opportunity. On B School graduates as future leaders, he said, "While academic abilities remain integral, it is the work ethics that form the soul of the business. In today's world, the confluence of innovation and sustainability will be a key factor in determining a leader's success."
Dr. Bala Balachandran, founder and the Dean of Great Lakes Institute of Management welcomed Mr. Godrej and thanked him for being instrumental in Great Lakes' investment in a green campus.
