Lufthansa Student Website Provides Helpful Information on Need-Blind Admission
New Delhi, Delhi, India, Monday, June 07, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- Lufthansa's new student website (www.lufthansa.com/students) offers useful information about Need- blind admission, a process by which the evaluation of an applicant for admission is blind to his or her financial status.
Need- blind admission is available for international students at some of the most sought after schools in the world. In North America, these include Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Dartmouth, Williams, and Amherst.
It is commonly assumed that schools favor students who can afford college tuition without recourse to financial aid. But with Need-blind admission, an applicant's financial resources have no impact on his/her acceptance or rejection as these colleges consider only whether an applicant meets their admission criteria.
If a student is admitted, then the university granting admission under Need-blind criteria will cover the shortfall between the student's ability to pay and the actual expense of completing the program he/she is admitted to.
Over the years, many private colleges have faced a dilemma over the high cost of Need-blind admissions and the principle of accepting students regardless of their ability to pay. Yale was one of the first universities to commit to a Need-blind admission policy - over 45 years ago. Before that, financial aid was decided by a combination of "demonstrated financial need" and "individual merit". This did not guarantee financial aid for an applicant who may have qualified for admission. In 1964, the university decided that applicants who needed financial help should not be judged differently from those who were wealthier. That was when the family financial information was separated from a candidate's application for admission. At that point, Yale pledged to admit talent first and find the financing later, declaring: "No needy student will be denied the opportunity of attendance."
Around the same time as Yale, most of the Ivy institutions and some other elite private universities and colleges took a similar stance and agreed to provide needy students with a financial aid "package" to bridge the gap between what they could afford and what the school was charging.
These packages are a combination of bursaries, scholarships, grants, student loans and what the student can pay. Most importantly, this package is decided upon only after the university has confirmed that the student has been accepted for admission.
