Lufthansa Student Centre offers advice on packing for university
New Delhi, Delhi, India, Tuesday, June 22, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- The Lufthansa student website provides useful packing tips to students flying to university in North America.
The very first step before packing is to check with the airlines to confirm how much baggage is allowed on the flight. Usually, passengers on international flights to North America are allowed to check in 2 bags around 20 kilos each (dimensions vary depending on the airline) and one hand bag that you can carry with you on the plane.
On Lufthansa, students flying for the Fall 2010 semester have the advantage of the Lufthansa Student Special under which the excess baggage allowance provides for an additional free check-in bag to the point of entry into North America (See www.lufthansa.com/students for details).
Once the exact allowance is determined, begins the important task of packing right.
Here are some tips on essentials and other useful things to carry along:
Documents: Make a detailed list of the documents required for travel as well as those requested by the university. Among these would be:
Official Documents: Original passport and visa, and a copy of your I-20 form. These should be carried these in the hand baggage.
Medical documents: Proof of your immunization records (in English).
Certified copies of official diplomas, transcripts, recommendation letters: In case these are not in English, it is recommended that an English translation is carried as well.
Names and addresses/E-mail/phone/fax numbers of family and friends: In case there is no permanent address yet in the U.S., the international student office may be able to provide a temporary address at the university that can be used in the meantime.
Clothes: Check for weather conditions of the destination town and carry a basic selection of clothes for each season. American students dress casually on a daily basis but you will need at least one formal outfit for special occasions. The weather can change very rapidly in Fall from a warm summer to what would be considered quite chilly by tropical standards. So a jacket and some sweatshirts or sweaters may be needed soon after arrival.
Medicines: A small supply of familiar medication, such as pain relievers, should be carried along as medicines can be quite expensive in North America. In case of required prescription medicines, a larger supply of those should be packed as well as doctors in the US cannot prescribe medications without undertaking a diagnosis, even if a prescription is presented to them.
Books: Books are heavy, so only the ones that need to be carried from home should be packed. It is usually recommended to get to university and then purchase the recommended editions of the specific text books advised in the course curriculum.
While gifts are not essential, a few inexpensive token gifts like small handicrafts make nice mementos to share with new friends.
