3D TV LCD Panel with LG's IPS Technology Receives Gold Award for "Display of the Year" at SID 2010

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Wednesday, June 09, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- LG Display, a leading innovator of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology, recently won the Gold Award for 'Display of the Year' from SID (Society for Information Display). The recognition affirms the company's world-leading 3D technology which is backed by LG's innovative In Plane Switching (IPS) technology.

'Display of Year Award' was presented during a ceremony held last week in Seattle, US. LG Display's 3D LCD panel is a full HD 47-inch for use with polarized glasses. It was the world's first large-area 3D TV LCD panel to be mass produced and received high marks for playing an integral part in opening the era of 3D TV. The panel produces crisp and true-to-life 3D images in addition to realizing superior quality 2D images thanks to the application of IPS technology.

IPS technology
offers vivid & clear 3D motion picture because of its fast MPRT (Motion Picture Response Time) and the same color from any viewing angle to give more natural 3D picture to everyone. Viewing experience is therefore enhanced as viewers are assured that there will be no colour distortion from any angle, thus being least strenuous to human eyes. The touch panel is also vastly stable as moving picture image sticking does not occur.

LG's IPS technology is one of the world's leading LCD technologies, and innovatively aligns liquid crystal technology to increase the viewing angle. Developed in 1996, IPS was initially meant to improve on the poor viewing angle and the poor color reproduction of twisted nematic (TN) panels at that time. The IPS panel is hard. Its horizontal switch molecular arrangement does not change even on being knocked. When the IPS panel is pressed down, the original colours remain, with some change of brightness. Thus, comparing with the vertical arrangement made by the VA LCD technologies, the molecule reducibility of IPS technology is more powerful, and its panel is more stable and durable.

At the awards ceremony, Mr. Lee, Vice President, Head of Promotion Department, commented, "With IPS technology being the primary characteristic of LG Display's 3D LCD Panel, viewers can be assured of the best picture quality which guarantees a sharp and clear picture. We are extremely delighted to receive the Gold Award this year as it emphasizes our unsurpassed 3D technology. LG Display's 3D technology with LG's IPS technology assures the best 3D Picture Quality like 2D. IPS technology is definitely the first choice of consumers that promises a truly world-class viewing experience."

LG Display also attracted much attention from visitors to SID 2010 with its lineup of upgraded 3D LCD panel technologies, including products for use with polarized and shutter glasses. The products exhibited include a 3D panel for use with shutter glasses that vastly reduces 'crosstalk' to approximately 1 percent; a 23-inch 3D monitor LCD panel that delivers full HD resolution; the world's largest 84-inch UHD (ultra high definition) 3D panel with 3840X2160 resolution, four times the resolution of previous 1920X1090 resolution full HD TV panels; and a 47-inch TV panel that eliminated the need for 3D glasses. SID 2010 was held in the Washington State Convention Center, Seattle, Washington, during May 25~27.

About IPS:

IPS (In Plane Switching) technology is one of the most leading LCD technologies in the world. IPS technology innovatively aligns liquid crystal horizontally to increase the viewing angle and changes the LCD transmittance. IPS is mainly owned by LG Display Company. This technology was unanimously accepted in its early phase by professionals from all across the globe.

IPS enabled LCD TV particularly deserves praise on its dynamic image expression in comparison to Normal LCD TV, because the IPS liquid crystal responds faster and expresses smoother moving images. While ensuring the image sharpness, IPS is more suitable to viewing dynamic images such as the Olympic Games and can entirely satisfy consumer needs for high definition images.
