TERI BCSD India and Johnson Controls Organize the First India Energy Efficiency Forum
Event Examines Impact of Energy Policy and Legislation on Business

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Wednesday, May 05, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- Reaffirming their commitment to sustainable development, TERI-BCSD India and its member company Johnson Controls India Pvt. Ltd., today held the first India Energy Efficiency Forum. The forum brought together leaders of government, business and nongovernmental organizations to discuss and identify barriers to energy efficient practices and to highlight opportunities for energy efficiency in India. The presentations debated energy policy and legislation, and action on potential energy savings and carbon dioxide reductions, with special focus on the impact on businesses.

Guest presenters included Dr. Farooq Abdullah, hon'ble minister of New and Renewable Energy, GoI, Dr. R K Pachauri, DG TERI and president, TERI-BCSD India, Dr. Ajay Mathur, director general, Bureau of Energy Efficiency; and Clay Nesler, vice president, Global Energy & Sustainability, Johnson Controls, the global leader in delivering products, services and solutions that increase energy efficiency in buildings.

Commending Dr RK Pachauri's leadership and TERI-BCSD India's efforts in organizing such an important forum, and speaking on the importance of renewable energy, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, said, "Provision of sustainable energy to all sectors such as domestic, commercial, institutional, agriculture and industry is crucial to maintain the socio-economic development." He added that it was time for ministries such as the Power ministry, Environment ministry and his own ministry to join hands together along with the corporate sector to achieve the national action plan on climate change with special emphasis on the National Solar mission that will empower India towards greater self-sufficiency in the near future."

Delivering his keynote address Dr. R K Pachauri said, "We need to change our consumption pattern as far as energy efficiency is concerned. Unless we bring about that change, mankind will never be able to come out of the 'natural debt' that is mounting on us because of the inefficient pattern of development that is being pursued. Energy productivity is going to be a big challenge, and with efforts such as what Johnson Control has taken, can be a boon in achieving sustainable development in the future."

Opening the forum, Mr. Nesler from Johnson Controls said, "We believe that building technologies represent a huge opportunity for cutting emissions. Energy use in commercial buildings could be reduced by a fifth (20 percent) simply by using existing technologies, which would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 30 percent. This first India event builds on the legacy of the Energy Efficiency Forum that Johnson Controls has supported since 1990 in the U.S. and further demonstrates our commitment to improving efficiency and sustainability through innovative building technologies."

In India, energy efficiency is increasingly seen as a viable option that is cost competitive, supplemental and environmentally sound. However, an integrated and coordinated approach for technological improvements, policy measures and institutional development is essential to improve energy efficiency in various sectors of the economy. The first step toward building this approach is to understand the concept, identify the issues and challenges involved and thereafter arrive at solutions.

The construction industry in India is currently growing at the rate of more than 30 percent. Making buildings energy efficient is a pressing need for this growth to be sustainable. As in other parts of the world, the concept of green buildings is slowly catching on in India. The focus here is on constructing environment friendly buildings.

Energy efficient features are being incorporated into various aspects of buildings in India. Energy efficiency measures are being taken up individually by different stakeholders who have become aware of sustainability issues and are taking strong measures to ensure a greener future for the country.

At the forum, Johnson Controls introduced their innovative discussion tool, Sustainability Solutions Navigator, to be used as an effective communication platform by government, industry and academic participants to discuss energy efficiency and sustainability challenges facing India, and to explore actionable solutions rooted in analysis of data collected through the discussion. The outcomes of the Navigator include a comprehensive assessment report on sustainability needs and practices, and a summary of suggestions for improvement. The Navigator has been widely applied by over 300 organizations in the United States, U.K. and Brazil over the past decade and won the 2005 CoreNet Global Innovation Award.

More than 100 leaders from the public and private sector, heads of multi/bi-lateral organizations and senior government representatives from across the country attended the programme.

About GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) - TERIs green building rating system
Internationally, voluntary building rating systems have been instrumental in raising awareness and popularizing green design. However, most of the internationally devised rating systems have been tailored to suit the building industry of the country where they were developed. In India, a US based LEED rating system is under promotion, which is more on energy efficiency measures in AC buildings. Keeping in view of the Indian agro-climatic conditions and in particular the preponderance of non-AC buildings, a National Rating System - GRIHA has been developed which is suitable for all kinds of building in different climatic zones of the country. The system was initially conceived and developed by TERI (The Energy & Resource Institute) as TERI-GRIHA, which has been modified to GRIHA as National Rating System after incorporating various modifications suggested by a group of architects and experts. It takes into account the provisions of the National Building Code 2005, the Energy Conservation Building Code 2007 announced by BEE and other IS codes, local bye-laws, other local standards and laws. The system, by its qualitative and quantitative assessment criteria, 'rates' a building on the degree of its 'greenness'. The rating is applicable to new building stock of varied functions - commercial, institutional, and residential.
