TERI Organises Second YUVA Meet for Youth to Understand the 'Social Take' on Climate Change
New Delhi, Delhi, India, Wednesday, February 03, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- Climate change not only impacts the ecology, it has far-reaching consequences for the society, culture, and politics of the nations. Until now, much of the emphasis has been on understanding atmospheric and scientific changes resulting from climate change. However, a 'social take' on it has gained urgency only recently. Against this background, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) brought together young people from various parts of the world for the Second YUVA (Youth Unite for Voluntary Action) Meet 2010 on 'Understanding climate change through the social glass'. It is a special event of the DSDS (Delhi Sustainable Development Summit) 2010 - a flagship event of TERI being organized since 2001.
Present on the occasion were, Mr. Charlie Walker, Director Programmes, British Council, Dr. RK Pachauri, Director General, TERI, Mr. Ibrahim H.Rehman, Director, Social Transformation, TERI, Dr. PP. Bhojvaid, Vice Chancellor, TERI University and Ms. Ranjana Saikia, Associate Director, TERI.
Elaborating on the need for such meets, Mr. Charlie Walker, said, "The British Council is pleased to partner TERI in such programmes for young people since we believe that they have the potential to change things. Our International Climate champions are making a difference in their own ways through community development and institutional projects that they have taken up as part of the programme."
Giving an overview of YUVA, Ms. Ranjana Saikia, said, "In this second edition of YUVA, we are focused on issues of equity, justice, lifestyle, culture and their linkages with climate change. YUVA meet brought together youth from some of the best institutions in India and abroad to discuss and come up with new solutions to combat climate change. It is not just an event, it is a part of TERI's larger campaign to create a sustainable society."
TERI firmly believes that, while the youth will bear the brunt of the negative impacts of climate change, they also symbolize a great force in combating it and carry immense potential to be the flag bearers of change. The Second YUVA Meet aimed at providing them with a holistic overview of the emerging challenges of climate change, especially its impact on the society and how people can mitigate and adapt to it by following a road towards sustainable development. The Meet aspires to create change-makers, who through their knowledge, observation, and action, will combat climate change for a greener today and for an environment that will nurture the future generations.
The main highlights of the meet were:
-- Focus on the social aspects of climate change
-- Encourage the youth to think critically about environmental issues
-- Provide a platform to the youth to voice their opinions
-- Establish a forum for exchange of ideas and development of networks
-- Empower participants to undertake environmental initiatives
Following activities were undertaken during the meet:
-- 'Envirotisement' - an ad-making contest that would see participants selling environmental issues/problems as products
-- Poster exhibition
-- NGOs exhibition
-- Books on display
-- Non-formal communication methods like skits and role-plays for creating awareness about environmental issues
-- Certificates and exciting prizes for winners under various categories
The First YUVA Meet on climate change, held in 2009, witnessed the participation of youth from across India. This year, around 200 youth from colleges in India, foreign countries, and from diverse backgrounds like engineering, social science, science, journalism, film making, academia, researchers, activists and other stakeholders - NGOs, government departments, corporates, and media groups participated in the two-day meet.
