HCC Ties Up with AMEC for Independent Nuclear Technology Services
Opens Doors for Indian Nuclear Industry to Access State-of-the-Art Engineering Technology Consulting and World Class Project Management Practices
New Delhi, Delhi, India, Wednesday, September 30, 2009 -- (Business Wire India) -- HCC, India's leading engineering construction company, has signed a MoU with the international engineering and project management company AMEC plc (AMEC) to jointly explore the application of consulting and EPC services for the establishment of nuclear power plants in India. HCC, known for its civil engineering capabilities in nuclear power plant construction, has built over 50 per cent of India's installed nuclear capacity. This tie-up will further strengthen HCC's capabilities to execute services in the field of mechanical and electrical components of nuclear power plants by sourcing the latest prevailing global technologies through AMEC.
AMEC has a 50-year history of delivering highly complex new build programmes in the nuclear sector. From construction of the some of first civil nuclear power plants in the world to development of the latest Generation IV designs, AMEC has broad experience of various reactor technologies, and is wholly independent of vendors. AMEC has significant international experience in the nuclear sector and will bring world-class design, safety and project/programme management experience to support the development of new nuclear projects in India.
"We are delighted to have the opportunity to join India's exciting nuclear new build programme. This mutually advantageous partnership is an evidence of the beginning of a new nuclear era in India and we are proud to be part of it," commented Mr. Didier Pfleger, Chief Operating Officer, Power and Process, AMEC.
Announcing the tie-up, Mr. Ajit Gulabchand, Chairman & Managing Director, HCC said: "This partnership will enhance India's ability to implement the new generation of nuclear power technologies. HCC is the country's leading player in nuclear power plant construction. AMEC, with its globally benchmarked nuclear technology experience, is the ideal partner to help catapult India to the cutting edge of nuclear power generation. Our partnership will provide flexible and technology-independent platforms to reduce the cost of building new nuclear power plants in India."
"AMEC has world-class technical and engineering capability across all disciplines in the nuclear sector. Our independent technology expertise allows us to provide leading edge solutions that will assist India in bringing new technologies to its nuclear sector," said Mr. Tim Small, Director Global Markets & Strategy, Power and Process, AMEC.
India is the sixth-largest electricity generating country with a total installed capacity of about 100,000 MW with 2.5 per cent being contributed by its nuclear sector. The Government of India has embarked on mega plans to enhance the current installed nuclear power capacity of 4120 MW to 20,000 MW by 2020 and to 63,000 MW by 2032. Out of 63,000 MW envisaged 40,000 MW or more capacity of light water reactor, in technical collaboration with other countries, is planned. "HCC-AMEC combine will play a crucial role in the fast track development of this capacity," added Mr. Gulabchand.
