Amul Model Impresses Tanzania


Anand, Gujarat, India, Wednesday, September 16, 2009 -- (Business Wire India) -- H.E. Peter Mizengo PINDA, Hon. Prime Minister of Tanzania, Hon. Stephen M. Wasira, Minister for Agriculture, Food Security & Cooperatives, Hon. Burhani Saadat Haji, Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Environment, Govt. of the United Republic of Tanzania along with a high level delegation visited Amul Dairy and Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. (GCMMF), Anand on 16th September, 2009 during their four day visit to India.

After visiting Amul Dairy plant and Dr. Kurien's Museum, the Hon. Prime Minister met Shri Parthibhai Bhatol, Chairman, GCMMF, Shri B. M. Vyas, Managing Director, GCMMF and Shri Rahul Kumar, Managing Director, Kaira DCMPU Ltd. They held wide discussions on the relevance of Amul Model of dairy cooperatives for Tanzania.

During the discussion, Shri B. M. Vyas recalled the visit of Nobel Laureate Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, Father of the Green Revolution, to GCMMF in March 2005. Dr. Borlaug had stressed that Amul Model needs to be taken up for developing the dairy sector in the nations of Africa where he was focusing his attention at that time. This led to the launch of South South initiative by the World Bank in October 2008.

The Hon. Prime Minister lauded the success of Amul model and he proposed that a delegation of farmers from Tanzania should visit Amul to have a detailed understanding of the cooperative for its replication in that country.

At the end of the visit to Amul Dairy, H.E. Peter Mizengo PINDA remarked "Very inspiring! This is a clear success for the White Revolution. We look forward to joining you in making a White Revolution through you and your good people. Long live the good nation and her people".
