TERI and Tetra Pak Launch SEARCH Programme
Focusing on Environmental Sustainability, the Program Aims to Raise Awareness of Recycling Amongst Youth Involving 30 Schools each in Delhi-NCR and Bangalore

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Thursday, July 23, 2009 -- (Business Wire India) -- Everyday a huge amount of waste is generated from households, schools, hospitals and factories. The primary factors affecting waste quantity and quality are population, urbanisation, industrialisation and the changing lifestyle. Keeping environmental sustainability in mind, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in collaboration with Tetra Pak India Pvt. Ltd. has initiated Project SEARCH (Sensitisation, Education and Awareness on Recycling for Cleaner Habitat) to conduct awareness and sensitisation drives in schools in order to instil a habit of recycling amongst the youth. Present on the occasion were Mr. Jaideep Gokhale, Food for Development and Environment, Tetra Pak India Pvt. Ltd., Ms. Ranjana Saikia, Associate Director TERI, Mr. Arshad Rizvy, Director, Development Links Foundation, Delhi and Dinesh Kapur, International Climate Champion 2009-2010, British Council among others.

Speaking on the initiative Ms. Ranjana Saikia, said "At TERI, we are constantly fighting the odds and work hard towards sensitising people, especially young students about the perils of environmental degradation. With Project SEARCH we are taking the message of waste recycling to 60 schools in Delhi and Bangalore in partnership with Tetra Pak which is world's leading food processing and packaging solutions company. Together with Tetra Pak, we will be educating students about problems related to waste and the virtues of reusing, reducing and recycling."

Explaining about Tetra Pak's involvement, Mr. Jaideep Gokhale said "Tetra Pak prides itself in being an environment conscious organization and over the past few years has taken lead in creating environment awareness among people. On the launch of Tetra Pak - TERI project 'SEARCH' we are determined to create awareness amongst students by educating them and sensitising them on health as well as environment benefits of choosing Tetra Pak packages, we also want people to follow some good waste management practices. The engagement of students in environment conservation initiatives at an early age is necessary. It is important that they imbibe sustainable practices early on and are able to influence others to follow as well".

Project SEARCH will be implemented over a span of 9 months and would involve 30 schools each in Delhi NCR and Bangalore. This programme would enable thousands of children to play a more proactive role and be the key drivers in the essential process of enhancing environment protection knowledge followed by positive action. TERI will focus on the overall concept of 'Awareness - Analysis - Reflection - Action' to raise awareness and encourage students to actively participate in the programme.

Main objectives of the programme are as follows:

- To raise awareness amongst school students on environment in general and recycling in specific.

- To instil among children good waste management practices.

- To educate students on benefits of carton packaging that keeps the food safe and nutritious and which can be recycled easily.

- To inculcate the habit of recycling of waste amongst students thus indirectly help mitigating climate change.

- To help Tetra Pak set-up collection centres in schools for recycling of used Tetra Pak cartons.
