India TV Reconnects "Anju" with Family
Sets A Benchmark in Public-Spirited News Television
New Delhi, Delhi, India, Monday, June 01, 2009 -- (Business Wire India) -- Rajat Sharma's India TV today raised the bar for journalistic follow through and public-spirited news television.
After riveting the nation since Thursday night with the poignant story of Anju (real name Vanitha) who had lost her memory and had ended up being rescued from flesh traders by good samaritan Dr Jayaben Amipara of Surat, the channel today succeeded in connecting "Anju" with her parents and her husband.
The story became front-page news in some national dailies today.
"Anju" was a name given to Vanitha by Dr Amipara.
After diligent follow up, India TV today revealed that "Anju" got married when she was 14 years old and she has a 16-year-old daughter. The daughter is in boarding in Karnataka and is now a days at her maternal grand father's home in Santa Cruz, Mumbai.
CL Gowda, the father of "Anju", her husband Beju Gowda and her sister-in-law Sujatha contacted India TV helplines to reconnect with their lost family member.
In August last year, "Anju" had been found in Surat's New Civil Hospital with her past erased from poisoning. She was discharged by an unidentified man (claiming to be a menial labourer by the name of Rajesh) who then offered "Anju" as domestic help to Dr Amipara. He also left behind his wife and a teenaged boy. Rajesh then returned some three weeks later and tried to sell "Anju" for Rs 500, before Dr Amipara threatened him with an arrest.
Speaking to India TV, Dr Amipara said she always felt that "Anju" didn't belong to Rajesh's family and she had been trying to locate the parents of "Anju" ever since. The doctor had even pasted pictures of "Anju" at various public places and had regularly followed up with the police with no results until India TV intervened. "Anju" speaks Hindi and Gujarati and fluent English.
