India Preparing to Become World's Third Largest Aviation Market
New CAPA-SITA report highlights technology and innovation as catalysts to growth in the industry
Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India, Friday, March 30, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- A new report published today by CAPA - Centre for Aviation and air transport IT specialist SITA forecasts that India will become the world's third largest aviation market by 2020 and examines whether the country has the right investment, infrastructure and regulatory system to enable this growth. Technology and innovative practices will play a key role in meeting the challenge of growth but the report finds that IT is not always considered a tool of strategic importance.
The joint CAPA-SITA Report on Innovation and Technology: Opportunities for Transformation in Indian Aviation builds on a previous report produced in 2010. It provides an update on the IT landscape in India's air transport industry, and also highlights some of the challenges in deploying innovative technology across the industry. The report incorporates the perspectives of the key stakeholders in the industry and makes some predictions for the future.
Indian aviation has changed hugely since 2000 when just one carrier flew overseas - today there are seven; passenger traffic has increased from 42 million to 150 million; and the country's fleet has grown from 119 aircraft to 437. The low cost sector has grown massively and now represents 70 percent of the market. The CAPA-SITA report predicts that by 2020, 452 million passengers will fly each year and there will be 1,030 aircraft in the fleet. This will make India the world's third largest aviation market.
Indian aviation has seen financial turbulence in recent years, but investment is vital if the industry is to meet the challenges of growth. Total investment in the Indian air transport industry since 2000 is estimated at US$27 billion and is expected to reach US$120 billion by 2020, of which US$80 billion will be spent on new aircraft. To meet the demands of air transport in 2020, up to US$2 billion will need to be spent on air traffic control and more than US$1.5 billion on upgrading security. According to the report, airline IT spend as a percentage of revenue ranges from one to three percent with 70 percent of those surveyed expecting their IT spend to increase. The key drivers for investment are operational efficiency; enhancing the customer experience; and cost reductions. Mobility is a key focus with 90 percent of respondents expecting to increase investment in this area.

Since the 2010 report, deployment of technology has been slow due to financial constraints but there has been increased deployment of key IT solutions including websites for sales; implementation of Common Use Terminal Equipment (CUTE) in airports; Common Use Self Service (CUSS); baggage reconciliation systems; flight information display systems; and others. Over the next few years the report forecasts an increase in mobility solutions including mobile check-in; biometric identification systems; increasing use of the Cloud and social media applications amongst other developments.

Infineon's New GNSS Receive Front-End Modules Feature Industry's Best Noise Figure in World's Smallest Package
Neubiberg, Germany, Thursday, March 29, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- Infineon Technologies (FSE: IFX/OTCQX: IFNNY) today introduced a new series of Receive Front-End Modules for implementation of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) functionality in smart phones and other handheld devices. The new BGM104xN7 products feature the best noise figure in the industry, which is a critical parameter for the performance of a GNSS receiver.
The new modules are a pin-to-pin compatible upgrade with the previous generation BGM103xN7, and thus remain as the world's smallest Receive Front-End Modules for this application, with a package size of just 2.3 x 1.7 x 0.73 mm3. They support simultaneous reception of both GPS (Global Positioning System) and GLONASS (Globalnaya Navigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema) signals. The devices are optimized for different end platforms and offer industry's leading noise figure, low-power operation, and exceptional protection against electrostatic discharge (ESD).
For the reception of weak GNSS signals, a low noise figure results in a shorter Time-To-First-Fix (TTFF), which is the time required for a GNSS receiver to acquire satellite signals and navigation data and to calculate a position. The new BGM104xN7 series offers 0.15dB better noise figure than the BGM103xN7 series. Therewith, Infineon's solution outperforms all other solutions on the market about 0.5dB. The improved performance is achieved in a package that is almost 22% smaller than the second smallest available device.
Infineon's BGM104xN7 modules combine the pre-filter and low noise amplifier (LNA) stages of the GNSS signal chain front-end to achieve a balance of performance improvements and space savings while reducing design time. The low noise figure enhances user's navigation experience while using smart phones or any other portable device. In addition, the device family meets key design goals: this includes high linearity to avoid interference of more powerful cellular signals, single-module coverage of the frequency range from 1,575 to 1,605 MHz, and optimized gain for state-of-the-art sensitivity.

Infineon's New GNSS Receive Front-End Modules Feature Industry's Best Noise Figure in World's Smallest Package
Neubiberg, Germany, Thursday, March 29, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- Infineon Technologies (FSE: IFX/OTCQX: IFNNY) today introduced a new series of Receive Front-End Modules for implementation of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) functionality in smart phones and other handheld devices. The new BGM104xN7 products feature the best noise figure in the industry, which is a critical parameter for the performance of a GNSS receiver.
The new modules are a pin-to-pin compatible upgrade with the previous generation BGM103xN7, and thus remain as the world's smallest Receive Front-End Modules for this application, with a package size of just 2.3 x 1.7 x 0.73 mm3. They support simultaneous reception of both GPS (Global Positioning System) and GLONASS (Globalnaya Navigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema) signals. The devices are optimized for different end platforms and offer industry's leading noise figure, low-power operation, and exceptional protection against electrostatic discharge (ESD).
For the reception of weak GNSS signals, a low noise figure results in a shorter Time-To-First-Fix (TTFF), which is the time required for a GNSS receiver to acquire satellite signals and navigation data and to calculate a position. The new BGM104xN7 series offers 0.15dB better noise figure than the BGM103xN7 series. Therewith, Infineon's solution outperforms all other solutions on the market about 0.5dB. The improved performance is achieved in a package that is almost 22% smaller than the second smallest available device.
Infineon's BGM104xN7 modules combine the pre-filter and low noise amplifier (LNA) stages of the GNSS signal chain front-end to achieve a balance of performance improvements and space savings while reducing design time. The low noise figure enhances user's navigation experience while using smart phones or any other portable device. In addition, the device family meets key design goals: this includes high linearity to avoid interference of more powerful cellular signals, single-module coverage of the frequency range from 1,575 to 1,605 MHz, and optimized gain for state-of-the-art sensitivity.

Researchers at iSuppli estimate 2012 sales of 450 million smart phones, which nearly all support GNSS applications. With the new BGM104xN7 series, Infineon helps designers meet requirements for personal navigation and location based applications not only for smart phones, but such portable devices as tablets, personal navigation devices (PNDs) and digital cameras.
The new BGM104xN7 series contains two modules, targeted for specific platform applications:
-- BGM1043N7: Standard solution meeting high-performance GPS/GLONASS specifications, with 14.8dB gain and 1.5dB noise figure.
-- BGM1044N7: A high-gain (17.0 dB) version (1.55dB noise figure) for systems with high losses in the receive chain, such as personal navigation devices and digital still cameras, where the potential for jamming due to high power cellular signals is less critical.

Modules are now available. Infineon also provides evaluation kits.
Typical pricing for BGM104xN7 modules is ? 0.35/ $0.50 (10,000 piece volume). The devices are shipped in a TSNP-7-10 leadless package (2.3mm x 1.7mm x 0.73mm) which makes them the smallest available solutions in the market.

The MCU enables integration of modern weapons on legacy aircraft with minimal to no modifications to aircraft wiring and the flight or stores management software. The MCU's compact size enables it to be located in a weapons pylon or avionics bay of a legacy aircraft. From there, it interfaces between "smart" weapons and the existing software of a legacy aircraft.
"Providing the IAF the capability to enhance their Jaguar fleet is the latest chapter in Raytheon's six-decade history of trusted partnership in India," said Harry Schulte, Raytheon Missile Systems' vice president of Air Warfare Systems. "MCU will give the Jaguar the capability to employ 'smart' or 'advanced' weapons like the Joint Standoff Weapon, Maverick missile, PavewayT precision-guided munition and AIM-9M Sidewinder air-to-air missile."
Raytheon was awarded a contract to build the MCU in 2011, and funding was authorized for the system in 2012. In anticipation of the contract, Raytheon began preliminary work to integrate MCU on Jaguar in 2008.

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Tuesday, March 27, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- Despite 2011 being one of the most tumultuous years on record, businesses around the world have grown in confidence about their ability to back up and then recover data and IT systems following a disaster.
According to the 2012 Acronis Global Disaster Recovery (DR) Index, businesses are on average 14% more confident in their backup and DR capabilities than they were compared to the previous year's result in the Index. Key to this rise is the perceived improvements in having the right resources (tools / environment) and the right technologies for the job. Confidence in these two criteria alone has more than doubled in the past 12 months.
Underlying this increase in confidence is the fact that 66% of businesses are checking their backup and disaster recovery plans more regularly, possibly as a consequence of the catastrophic natural disasters which hit most regions during 2011, including destructive flooding in Australia, Brazil and Thailand, deadly earthquakes in New Zealand and Turkey, storms costing billions in damages across the United States and the devastating tsunami in Japan from which some businesses are still yet to fully recover.
Despite an overall improvement in confidence, other more concerning findings from the survey of almost 6,000 small and medium-sized businesses (SMB) in 18 countries include:
-- Flat budgets: businesses are spending the same on backup and DR year on year (10% of IT spend).
-- Almost half (47%) now feel that business executives are not supportive of their backup and disaster recovery operations.
-- Data growth continues unabated: a typical SMB creates almost 40TB of fresh data each year.
-- To err is human: 60% of those surveyed blame human error as the most common cause of system downtime.
-- The cost of failure: average system downtime lasts 2.2 days costing each business USD$366,363 each year in lost productivity.
Managing hybrid physical, virtual and cloud environments presents the biggest challenge
The vast majority (70%) of the IT managers surveyed agree that, for the second year running, their greatest challenge in a hybrid environment is moving data between physical, virtual and cloud environments. Yet the survey found that most businesses are still failing to consolidate their backup and disaster recovery tools to address this challenge. Most rely on multiple tools, with a third using three or more different solutions to protect their data. Over half (53%) use separate solutions for their physical and virtual environments.

To create the Index, each country surveyed was ranked based on its average responses from 11 questions about their confidence in backup and DR readiness, capabilities and practices. Questions covered technology, resources, procedures and executive buy-in.

According to the 2012 Acronis Global Disaster Recovery (DR) Index, businesses are on average 14% more confident in their backup and DR capabilities than they were compared to the previous year's result in the Index. Key to this rise is the perceived improvements in having the right resources (tools / environment) and the right technologies for the job. Confidence in these two criteria alone has more than doubled in the past 12 months.
Underlying this increase in confidence is the fact that 66% of businesses are checking their backup and disaster recovery plans more regularly, possibly as a consequence of the catastrophic natural disasters which hit most regions during 2011, including destructive flooding in Australia, Brazil and Thailand, deadly earthquakes in New Zealand and Turkey, storms costing billions in damages across the United States and the devastating tsunami in Japan from which some businesses are still yet to fully recover.
Despite an overall improvement in confidence, other more concerning findings from the survey of almost 6,000 small and medium-sized businesses (SMB) in 18 countries include:
-- Flat budgets: businesses are spending the same on backup and DR year on year (10% of IT spend).
-- Almost half (47%) now feel that business executives are not supportive of their backup and disaster recovery operations.
-- Data growth continues unabated: a typical SMB creates almost 40TB of fresh data each year.
-- To err is human: 60% of those surveyed blame human error as the most common cause of system downtime.
-- The cost of failure: average system downtime lasts 2.2 days costing each business USD$366,363 each year in lost productivity.
Managing hybrid physical, virtual and cloud environments presents the biggest challenge
The vast majority (70%) of the IT managers surveyed agree that, for the second year running, their greatest challenge in a hybrid environment is moving data between physical, virtual and cloud environments. Yet the survey found that most businesses are still failing to consolidate their backup and disaster recovery tools to address this challenge. Most rely on multiple tools, with a third using three or more different solutions to protect their data. Over half (53%) use separate solutions for their physical and virtual environments.

To create the Index, each country surveyed was ranked based on its average responses from 11 questions about their confidence in backup and DR readiness, capabilities and practices. Questions covered technology, resources, procedures and executive buy-in.

However, for all the positives in the survey, too many strategic-level negatives, such as failure to get executive buy-in and the use of multiple, disjointed solutions, linger when it comes to keeping the business-critical digital assets of a business secure, protected and immediately available, particularly in a hybrid world."

The survey was conducted by the Ponemon Institute across 18 countries in September and October 2011. Over 6,000 IT practitioners were surveyed in small- to mid-market organisations with no more than 1,000 seats (no more than 500 seats in Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong).
