Exposure to 'Passive' Tobacco Smoking from Parents During Childhood and Spouse During Adulthood Increases the Risk of Developing Asthma by 69%


Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Monday, May 31, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, doctors in the city highlighted that passive tobacco smoking at home is a significant risk factor for children in development of asthma as their lungs are still developing and they breathe faster than adults thereby inhaling more smoke. Of all asthma patients, 49% of them have a history of growing up with smoking parents and could have developed asthma due to the early exposure to tobacco smoke. Combined exposure to passive smoking from parents during childhood and further from spouse during adulthood increases the risk of developing asthma in a person by 69%.

Children who already have asthma, when exposed to passive tobacco smoking at home often experience worsening of their symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and breathlessness and are also at an increased risk of getting an asthma attack. These children are therefore more likely to require emergency treatment which at times could include hospitalization. Also, it has now been well-established that the efficacy of asthma medicines is significantly reduced when the asthma patient has parents smoking at home.

Commenting on the effect of cigarette smoking on asthma kids, Dr. Sujeet K Rajan, Consultant Chest Physician, Bombay Hospital said, "Parents should realize that cigarette smoking not only causes irreversible damage to their own lungs, but could also result in the development of asthma in their kids who were not born with it. Even breathing in very small amounts of tobacco smoke could set off a severe attack in children with asthma and these attacks would be worse than those suffered by children with asthma who are not exposed to tobacco smoke. "

In adults, cigarette smoking and asthma is associated with poor symptom control, reduction in response to asthma medication and an accelerated decline in lung function.

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disorder of the lungs in which there is inflammation (swelling) of the airways in our lungs. Due to this inflammation, the airways are narrowed and the lung becomes vulnerable to various allergens which act as triggers for an asthma attack. Consolidated Results for FY 2010

CTEL has achieved a turnover of Rs. 70.33 Crore for the year ended 31st March, 2010, as against a turnover of Rs. 178.32 Crore in the previous year. The Company posted a loss at EBIDTA level of Rs. 3.81 Crore for the year ended 31st March, 2010 versus a profit of Rs. 23.27 Crore recorded in the year ending 31st March, 2009. Net Loss for the year ended 31st March, 2010 is Rs. 20.42 Crore, and the same was a Profit of Rs. 5.65 Crore, for the year ended 31st March, 2009.

Standalone Results for FY 2010

CTEL has achieved a turnover of Rs. 32.78 Crore for the year ended 31st March, 2010, as against a turnover of Rs. 48.05 Crore in the previous year. The Company posted an EBIDTA of Rs. 12.73 Crore for the year ended 31st March, 2010 versus Rs. 11.16 Crore recorded in the year ending 31st March, 2009. Net Profit for the year ended 31st March, 2010 is Rs. 9.63 Lakh, and the same was Rs. 4.61 Crore, for the year ended 31st March, 2009.

Others Highlights

Consolidated financials do not include financials of Smartshift Gmbh, and Vox Holdings Inc., for pending legal formalities. Smartshift Gmbh has generated revenue of Euro 1,031,780 and made a Net Profit of Euro 119,647 during the period 11th November, 2009 to 31st March, 2010.

The Polo Cup India 2010 will have six races in total with the 1st race being kicked off today at Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi, Pune, the hometown of Volkswagen India. Over 1,100 motor sports enthusiasts from across the country registered to compete in the Polo Cup India 2010 and become a part of Indian motor sport history. After a strict selection process 20 young talents were chosen to form the starting grid in the first race in Pune. The selection process ran from the last week of March to mid of May. The aspiring racers were divided into 2 groups - first-timers and experienced racers, and were put through two rounds of selection. The young racers were narrowed down to 45 drivers through an adrenalin-pumping go-kart selection. The short listed drivers were then placed behind the wheel of the Race Polo cars, for the second round of selections held in Coimbatore, to earn their place in the final 20 candidates for the races.

The candidates were selected with the support of the expert selection team. The team of selectors consisted of one driver selector & coach from Germany Polo Cup, two Indian driver coaches (experienced drivers from Volkswagen & JK Tyre) and one FMSCI representative, including some of the doyens of Indian motor sports like Akbar Ebrahim, India's only principle instructor in racing, Farhan Vora, India's guest F1 steward and Rayomand Banajee, six times National Champion. They personally followed the international structures and conducted the coaching camps to select the best young talent.

Sailesh Bolisetti Wins Inaugural Race of Volkswagen-JK Tyre Polo Cup India 2010


Pune, Maharashtra, India, Monday, May 31, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- Sailesh Bolisetti, the 22-year old driver from Vishakhapatnam, won the inaugural race of the Volkswagen-JK Tyre Polo Cup India 2010 on the street track in the Balewadi Sports Complex in Pune. The racer from Hyderabad led from start to finish as he created history by becoming the first winner of the Polo Cup today. He was followed home closely by Saran Vikram from Chennai and Karthik Shankar from Delhi.

Mohammed Fahad Kutty had finished in 3rd place but had then been given a 15 second penalty by the stewards for overtaking under yellow flags. It was a close finish as the top 6 were covered by less than 10 seconds at the chequered flag.

Sailesh had a great start and led from the start with Saran Vikram and Karthik Shankar behind him. Starting from 6th on the grid, Fahad Kutty (Mohammed) made a brilliant overtaking move to pass Shankar (Karthik) for 3rd position on lap 2. As he closed on second-placed Saran Vikram he clipped the tyre barrier into the first corner damaging his car in the process. He was unable to challenge Saran after that but did crossed the finish line in third place. He was later penalised for overtaking under yellow flags.

I made a good start and after that just had to make sure that I did not make any mistakes. It was quite a tough race as the cars behind me were really close together but am really satisfied with the result."

Karthik Shankar from Hyderabad finished in 3rd position while Vishnu Prasad (Chennai), Sahil Shelar (Pune) and Fahad Kutty rounded off the top 6. The only woman driver on the grid Alisha Abdullah finished in an impressive 14th place in her debut race.

There were a host of dignitaries present for the inaugural race of the Volkswagen-JK Tyre Polo Cup in India. This included Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, President, IOA, Mr. Suresh Shetty, Minister of Sports for the state of Maharastra, Mr. Raghupati Singhania, VP & MD, JK Tyre and Industries, Prof. Jochem Heizmann, Member of Board of Volkswagen AG, Mr. Joerg Muller, Volkswagen Group Chief Representative India and Mr. Kris Nissen, Volkswagen Motorsport Director.

Another surprise was in store as Bollywood actress Soha Ali Khan was invited to flag off the race, along with Prof. Heizmann and Mr. Kris Nissen. The Bollywood star was an instant hit with both the fans and media as she attended her first race.

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Sunday, May 30, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- Avaya, a global leader in enterprise communications systems, software and services, today announced that it has agreed to sell its approximate 59% ownership interest in AGC Networks Ltd. to affiliates of the Essar Group*.

The sale of its AGC Networks stake will enable Avaya to drive additional focus on two of its strategic imperatives: the development of the Avaya business in India and the growth and extension of its channel coverage model through Avaya's global channel program, Avaya Connect. AGC Networks remains a key channel partner of Avaya serving customers in the India market, one of the fastest growing enterprise communications markets in the world, and in Australia.

Avaya is focused on delivering fit-for-purpose communications systems to the enterprise market. Avaya currently enjoys a leadership position in the Unified Communications and Contact Center markets in India and globally and has a strong portfolio of data networking solutions and communications maintenance services.

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including those required by Indian law. One such condition is the completion by an Essar Group affiliate of a mandatory open offer made to public shareholders of AGC Networks. Under such open offer, the Essar Group affiliate shall offer to buy at least 20% of the voting capital of AGC Networks. The open offer process is expected to take between 3 and 5 months to complete. During that time, Avaya and AGC Networks will continue to work together to provide industry-leading products and services to customers in India and Australia.

When the IPS panel is pressed down, the original colours remain, with some change of brightness. 13% of Americans (12 to 64 years) with Internet Access Buy Digital Goods and Spend an Average of $99, A 14% Increase from Last Year

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Friday, May 28, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- Research and consultancy firm, Frank N. Magid Associates, and PlaySpan, the global leader in monetization solutions for online games, virtual worlds, and social networks, today announce their second annual study that evaluates attitudes and behaviors of media and entertainment consumers on virtual goods expenditures.

According to the study, 13% of the overall population surveyed reported that they had bought virtual goods in the last 12 months, with the mean of digital good purchase up 14% from $87 in 2009 to $99 in 2010. The median of digital goods purchase is $50 in 2010, a 67% improvement from $30 in 2009. In terms of the heaviest concentration of digital goods buyers, iPhone owners took over the #1 spot, moving from 28% of iPhone owners in 2009 to 43% in 2010. Virtual worlds came in second place with 41% of regular visitors having bought a digital good. Of weekly handheld and mobile gamers, 33% and 32%, respectively, bought digital goods. Overall, more than one-fifth (21%) of those who bought digital goods said they plan to spend more in the next 12 months. Among ways to purchase digital goods, 16% of digital goods buyers say they have used Facebook Credits.

"There's been a substantial increase in the number of consumers buying digital goods and an upward trend of players spending more on average than in the previous year," said Mike Vorhaus, President, Magid Advisors. "With the proliferation of smartphone users, and players becoming more comfortable paying for items within virtual worlds and social networks, Magid believes there is a huge opportunity for developers and publishers to capitalize on this growing multi-billion dollar industry, especially as virtual credits and pre-paid payment options become more widely accepted."

According to various sources, global revenues from the sales of virtual goods will eclipse $10 billion in 2010, while firms such as ThinkEquity, LLC have cited that the virtual goods industry now stands at a more than $1.6 billion in the U.S. alone, and is expected to climb to $3.6 billion in the next three years.

The survey was conducted between May 7 and May 12, 2010. It was a nationally representative online survey of 2,412 people, of whom, 1,955 were between the ages of 18 and 64 and 457 were between the ages of 8 and 17.
