Ullas Trust "Ignites" Over 1 Lakh Young Minds
Conducts its 17th Annual Workshop for Young Achievers in Chennai

Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India

Ullas Trust, Polaris’ social transformation initiative, conducted its 17th Ullas Annual Workshop at The Music Academy in Chennai. The ‘Can Do’ workshop was conducted by Arun Jain, Chairman & Managing Director, Polaris Financial Technology in the presence of dignitaries such as R. Sekar, IPS, DGP (Vigilance), Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Ltd., Dr. V. Krishnamurthy, CEO, Meenakashi Multispecialty Hospital, Bosskey, Actor and Standup Comedian, and Dhamu, Film Actor and Mimicry artist, The Master Trainer, Lead India 2020, a National Movement. Young Achievers scholarships were awarded to around 1000 students from 200 Corporation and Government schools during the event. The social initiative managed by Polaris Employees had covered 325 rural schools, during the academic year 2013-14, impacting 1 lakh children.

The Ullas  Trust  was  set  up  in 1997 by the employees of Polaris to ignite and shape  the  young  minds  of  students  from  Corporation,  Government  and Government-aided  schools  across the country. Very early in its evolution, the Ullas Trust decided  to  focus  its  energies  on  students  from  economically challenged  backgrounds during the most vulnerable phase in their lives, i.e. adolescence  The Trust believes this is the right period to nurture the ‘Can Do’ spirit in children to shape their aspirations and to channel their efforts towards meeting their goals.

Speaking on the occasion, Arun Jain, Chairman & Managing Director, Polaris Financial Technology Ltd said, “It is an inspiring and humbling experience to have the opportunity to engage with over a lakh of young minds. It is overwhelming to see Ullas transform  children and encourage the ‘Can Do’ spirit towards chasing their dreams and aspirations. The ‘SUMMIT’ and ‘TOUCH THE SOIL’ initiatives by Ullas are special programs that help children traverse new horizons in different spheres of life, thereby creating a positive impact in the global scenario.”

Polaris employees conduct two integrated and holistic programs - the weekend SUMMIT program and the ‘Touch The Soil’ program’s ‘Diary of Dreams’ workshops help transform the best among young minds. All employees at Polaris hold Ullas initiative close to their heart.

Under the ‘Can Do’ series, the company rolled out a unique Diary of Dreams workshop to over 2000 students anchored by Arun Jain. The students thoroughly enjoyed the interactive workshop and the process of identifying their dreams and making a commitment to achieve the same.

Teams from Polaris have nurtured the dreams of over 1 Lakh students last academic year through the Touch the Soil initiative. The initiative has impacted students in 326 schools covering 77 districts in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana, that includes 145 schools across 32 districts in Tamil Nadu.

Ullas has created integrated and holistic programs to encourage the ‘Can do’ spirit in young students based on six guiding principles:

  • A young mind learns through his/her observations and by expanding his view. One can broaden his/her vision in this manner
  • A young mind gets inspired by experiencing role models. Its only when one observes benchmarks of success can one even think about it
  • A young mind gets energized and further encouraged by recognition in a larger group
  • Between the ages of 13 and 16, the maximum change in one’s thought process occurs and any positive influence gets amplified
  • To bring anything to reality one needs to visualize it. When one pens his or her dreams on paper one’s own personal commitment to the dreams increases and the chances of achieving the dream increases
  • During the journey towards achieving dreams, if one’s thoughts are supported and discussed with a mentor, friend and guide, it inspires and accelerates momentum towards one’s goals

Snapshot of the Ullas programs:

1. SUMMIT - the weekend enrichment program

The SUMMIT Program, a follow-up of the Annual Workshop, is conducted by Polaris employees for students from government, government-aided and corporation schools for standards 9th to 12th. The SUMMIT program comprises of 20 modules spanning across crucial life skills including communication skills, confidence building, memory skills, active team work, public speaking, leadership skills and computer lab sessions. It is graded from Level 1 to Level 4, with Level 1 beginning for Class IX and finishing with Level 4 for Class XII.  Between  Standard IX to XII, each student undergoes  at  least  20  life  skills  intervention  programs  and annual workshops that help hone their self-confidence and overall personality.

The SUMMIT programs conducted this year in Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai and Hyderabad reached more than 6000 students from 450 schools.

Polaris employees get into the role of active trainers and mentor these students. By rendering these sessions, besides sheer joy and satisfaction, they get a unique opportunity to shape the thinking of thousands of young students, the future of our country.

2. ‘TOUCH THE SOIL’ Program – Nurtured the dreams of over 1 Lakh students last academic year

The  ‘Touch the Soil’ program reaches young minds in  the  districts  through  its  ‘Diary of Dreams’ and ‘Planning’ workshop  for  Class  IX  and X students. The program spreads the power of believing in dreams to high school students across the rural areas of the country. The Diary of Dreams workshop encourages children to share their aspirations and put down their dreams on paper, helping commit the dream to their subconscious. The objective is to inspire students to dream big and with conviction and start translating these dreams into action.

BWI: HCL Infosystems Reports Consolidated Revenue of Rs. 7852 Cr. for FY13-14

HCL Infosystems Reports Consolidated Revenue of Rs. 7852 Cr. for FY13-14

New Delhi, Delhi, India

  • Total revenue of Rs. 1730 Cr. for Q4 of FY 14 and Rs 7852 Cr. for the full year FY14.
  • Services business generated revenue of Rs 716 Cr. in FY 14 (YOY growth of 19%), non-telecom distribution generated revenue of Rs 901 Cr. (YOY growth of 46%) and telecom distribution declined marginally in FY 14 with sales of Rs. 4590 Cr.
  • Full Year revenue represents a drop of Rs 1445 Cr. from FY13, almost all of which was due to wind down of HCL computing products business and change of business model on other Hardware solutions business as a part of restructuring strategy that was announced by the company.
  • Total consolidated pre-tax loss of Rs 54 Cr. for Q4 and of Rs 186 Cr. for full year FY14, of which Rs 168 Cr. loss was due to computing products
  • Distribution and service lines of businesses registered full year pre-tax profit of Rs. 138 Cr. in FY 14.

HCL Infosystems, India’s Premier Distribution, IT Services and Solutions Company today announced its financial results for the fourth quarter and financial year ended June 30th, 2014.

Mr. Harsh Chitale, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, HCL Infosystems Limited, commenting on the results said, “The last fiscal was a year of transformation and change for HCL Infosystems as we completed the restructuring of the company which we had begun in 2013. The restructuring exercise has enabled an alignment of synergies and capabilities within HCLI to drive focus on our profitable and high ROI businesses of Distribution and Services.

The focus on Distribution and Services has borne early results. We added a number of new brands in our distribution portfolio during the year and our Non-Telecom Distribution business registered a growth of 31% Y-o-Y in the last quarter and 46% Y-o-Y in this financial year.

Our Services Business continued to grow in both enterprise and consumer segments. Enterprise services grew 17% Y-o-Y in FY14 and emerged as a preferred provider of Multi-Vendor Technology Support Services with many IT and Office Automation OEMs signing us for their after-sales service. Overseas services business registered robust growth and Consumer Care business grew 47% Y-o-Y in the financial year.

The restructuring journey also involved the decision to exit our loss-making HCL branded computing products business. The business has been under pressure for last few years due to high commoditisation, intense competition from global players with much larger economies of scale in manufacturing, and a volatile exchange rate. This phase out is expected to be completed in H1 FY15. As we reach the tail end of the wind down of computing products, we incur some additional charges as indicated in our earlier investor communications.

We have made progress on transition of business model to an asset light, IP & services centric  business model in our Hardware solutions and Learning businesses.

While, we are confident that this transformation to this new business model will help us create better value for our customers, partners and shareholders, we would like to remind that transformations such as these do have some inherent uncertainty in timing as well as in results.”

Distribution Business:

Telecom Distribution revenues registered a growth of 8% Q-o-Q, but declined 9% on a full year basis in FY14. However gross margin expanded due to operational efficiencies and widened scope of engagement. In the AMJ 2014 quarter, Telecom Distribution business witnessed healthy growth both in the value & volume across categories. Business expanded its last mile footprint and strengthened its rural presence by adding 290 RRDs (Regional Rural Distributors) in the year.

Non-Telecom Distribution (i.e. Consumer Electronics and Enterprise & IT Products) grew by 46% Y-o-Y in FY14. In the AMJ 2014 quarter the business achieved robust growth in Enterprise Products distribution with major orders from Punjab National Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Technologies & Micro Inks.  A new alliance with Lenovo and Acer to distribute and support their range of IT products was inked during the quarter. Consumer products distribution business has been focusing on the large and growing Consumer Electronics and Home Appliances distribution space by serving niche global brands entering India. A few large global marquee names such as DeLonghi, Braun and Hamilton Beach in consumer electronics and lifestyle products were signed during FY14.

Services Business:

In FY14, Services business, consisting of Enterprise and Consumer Services , both part of HCL Services Ltd. (a wholly owned subsidiary of HCL Infosystems Ltd.), achieved 19% Y-o-Y growth in FY14 on the back of strong business traction in the Indian and overseas markets. Our Services contract bank across India and Overseas geographies continues to expand and showed sequential growth in ACV from Rs. 380 Cr. as on July 1st, 2013 to Rs. 470 Cr. as on June 30th, 2014.

Enterprise Services

Enterprise Services business revenues grew to Rs 647 Cr. in FY14 in comparison to Rs. 553 Cr. in FY13, registering a growth of  17% Y-o-Y.

  • Infrastructure Managed Services (IMS) business focused on operational efficiencies to lead margin improvements in domestic business. This business significantly increased its annuity contract bank backed by multiple deals in BFSI, Manufacturing, Hospitality, & Utilities verticals in India and additional wins from the Government Nodal Authority for IT in Singapore to deliver services across 50+ government agencies. In the quarter the IMS business bagged contracts from Escorts, Asian Paints, Daimler, DHFL, KK Modi Group and IREO. In Qatar, the IMS business won a Multi-million dollar contract by displacing a leading MNC vendor.
  • The MVTS (Multi Vendor Technology Services) business won substantial AMC contracts from customers like Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. Our MVTS business was also selected by Dell & Lenovo to offer services to its customers. Due to reduced focus on the Company’s own branded computing products business in FY14, the MVTS business witnessed a sharp decline in warranty service revenue. New vendor sign-ups and mining of installed base helped offset this decline in warranty service revenue and hence the MVTS Services business remained largely flat in FY14 compared to FY13.
  • During the quarter Office Automation (OA) services contracts were won from Hero BPO, GMR and Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research. The OA services business was selected by Infocus for pan-India support of projectors.
  • In the AMJ2014 quarter, the Infrastructure Services business bagged large deals for IPv6 consulting from new India Assurance Ltd., datacentre migration deal from Ranbaxy and network & security services deal from Dalmia Cements. Infrastructure services business launched RTSG (Remote Technical Support Group) services for Fortinet security products.

Consumer Services (HCL Care)

In FY14 our consumer electronics break fix services business (HCL Care), grew from Rs 46 Cr. in FY13 to Rs 69 Cr. in FY14, registering a growth of 47%. HCL Care also expanded the footprint of its centers under the ‘Touch’ brand to more than 300 across the country. During the quarter, HCL Care won key deals from many leading brands in the Mobile, Tablets, Consumer Electronics and Consumer Durables space. HCL Care also formed an alliance with NxtGen for implementing a cloud-based solution for all its service touch points; achieved a high customer satisfaction (CSAT) score of 81.25% from OEM customers

HCL Learning Business:

With 1.4 million schools and over 36,000 colleges in India, with growing shortage of good teachers, opportunity for technology solutions and services for schools and colleges remains high. However, due to reliance on asset heavy BOOT model of offering solutions to schools with high incidence of NPAs, financial health of many leading players in this space deteriorated. As a result, in FY14 we did see a slowdown in deployment of technology solutions in schools.  During the year FY 14, we were selective in our pursuits and in new customer additions and as a result the business showed a decline during the year

This business is currently focussing on an asset light business model which relies on sale of state of the art educational content and services to schools. During the year FY 14, we launched an educational content offering for Students (MyEduWorld & MyIIT-Tutor) and were also successful in selling content licenses to schools in Africa, Middle East and Nepal.

Hardware Solutions & System Integration Businesses

  • During the quarter we made substantial progress in moving our enterprise hardware solutions business from a direct sales model to an indirect channel driven sales model. While transition to this business model for sale of Office automation products was substantially completed during FY 14, transition of other Enterprise products to this business model is expected to be completed in FY15.
  • System Integration business focused on disciplined execution of the existing order book which reduced from Rs 2800 Cr. on July 1st 2013 to Rs 2100 Cr. on June 30th 2014. In FY 14, this business focused on completing ongoing projects and collecting due payments to de-leverage the balance sheet. Going forward, leveraging our domain expertise and technical know-how we plan to pursue only asset-light ‘SI Services’ business.
  • Our project for Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) for Managed Services, has been progressing well and has contributed immensely to UIDAI’s achievement of generation of 65 Crore Aadhaar cards for residents of India.
  • While execution on most projects is progressing well and we expect to complete the existing order book of projects within next 30 months, as experience has shown, this business does have some uncertainty in completion of milestones and release of payments.

HCL Computing Products Business

  • Restructuring of the Company in this year also involved a decision to wind down the loss-making HCL computing products business. We have made substantial progress in the wind down of this business, which would be completed by end of H1 FY15. We have incurred some costs during the wind down of this business (which are already reflected in the loss of this business). As we  come to the tail end of the wind down process,  we may incur some additional charges in the next few quarters.
  • As we rapidly moved out of HCL Branded Computing products, we have been leveraging our existing distribution network and go to market capabilities to distribute other Enterprise and IT products and to grow our distribution portfolio.

Bangalore, Karnataka, India

Versatility and Striking Appearance with new design elements, BMW xLine package and best-in-class interior; Next Generation of EfficientDynamics with a new BMW diesel engine

Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India

A paragon of sporty dynamics, premium ambience and robust agility, the new BMW X3 was launched today at Deutsche Motoren, the BMW dealership in Noida.

The new BMW X3 is locally produced at the BMW Plant Chennai in a diesel variant and is now available at BMW dealerships across India.

Mr. Philipp von Sahr, President, BMW Group India said, “The new BMW X3 is the embodiment of independence. Whether it’s on the way to work, or on a weekend. With family or for some quality time alone. It is built for both the small and big challenges that each day brings. Its sporting character is revealed in an extremely dynamic driving experience with impressive efficiency and fascinating design that emphasises the athletic character of the new BMW X3.”

The new BMW X3 is available for the first time in a new design scheme: the BMW xLine equipment package which brings out the robust and dynamic Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) character even more prominently.

Interior trims offered are Fine-wood Trim Burled Walnut with highlight trim finishers Pearl Chrome.

The BMW xLine equipment package features matt aluminium inserts in the bumpers, individual kidney, individual xLine grill, side window design, exhaust pipes in matt aluminium, door sill finishers with ‘BMW xLine’ designation, sport leather steering wheel, new upholstery colors with lasering / X embossment, new interior trims, two new wheels designs and exclusive 18-inch light-alloy wheels.

The new BMW X3.

The new design elements lend the exterior of the new BMW X3 a distinct personality, making it look even more powerful, imposing and elegant. The modified twin circular headlights, a more eye-catching kidney grille, new front and rear bumpers and exterior mirrors with integrated side indicators cut a visually more powerful figure.

The new BMW X3 stands out once again with the best cabin space and luggage capacity in its class while offering exceptional flexibility and a host of functional details. Understated chrome applications, the centre console in high-gloss black-panel look and wood panelling with pearl-effect chrome highlights, round off the redesigned interior. Another attraction is the Panorama glass roof which provides a perfect view of everything the day has in store.

The BMW X3 xDrive 20d is the first model to feature the latest-generation diesel engine with outstanding performance and low fuel consumption. The new generation of all-aluminium 2.0 litre diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology uses common rail direct injection with solenoid valve injectors and works with increased injection pressure. This pushes the engine output to 140 kW/190 hp with the maximum torque of 400 Nm. The increase in performance cuts the vehicle’s 0 to 100 km/h acceleration to just 8.1 seconds with a top speed of 210 km/h.

The eight-speed automatic transmission with Cruise Control provides higher shifting and driving comfort through finely tuned gearing and seamless gear changes. At any time, in any gear, the transmission collaborates perfectly with the engine, enabling it to develop its full power and efficiency.

Driving Experience Control switch fitted as standard in the new BMW X3 lets the driver choose between different driving modes to suit the driving conditions (ECO PRO, Comfort and Sport). In the ECO PRO mode, all the on-board systems are set to maximum efficiency to dramatically minimise fuel consumption and CO2 emissions while the Sport mode enables greater driving pleasure.

The intelligent four-wheel BMW xDrive system adapts perfectly to even the most challenging road conditions, ensuring outstanding traction at all times. With xDrive and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), the vehicle remains directionally stable and distributes drive power flexibly between the two axles for optimum grip and safety.

The new BMW X3 offers a wide spectrum of cutting-edge safety systems such as air bags, BMW restraint system, passenger cell system with defined deformation zones, impact absorbing front and rear bumpers and Run-Flat tyres.

With BMW EfficientDynamics, the new BMW X3 is equipped with the most comprehensive technology packages to reduce fuel consumption and increase performance such as Intelligent Lightweight Construction, Auto Start-Stop, ECO PRO mode, Brake-Energy Regeneration, 50:50 Weight Distribution and many other innovative technologies.

The outstanding new features from BMW ConnectedDrive on board the new BMW X3 include the latest generation BMW iDrive (the on-board Driver Information System), Connectivity through Bluetooth and USB devices and Radio BMW Professional. Park Distance Control (PDC) comes as a standard feature.
