American Companies Drive Social Responsibility Programs Across India
Impact to economic development and improvement in the quality of life across multiple sectors

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Wednesday, March 28, 2012 -- (Business Wire India) -- The U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Mr. John Bryson, today released a compendium on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives of American firms in India, published by The American Chamber of Commerce in India (Amcham). This compendium presents select CSR initiatives undertaken by American companies in India focused in the areas of social infrastructure, education, water conservation, rain water harvesting, healthcare delivery, gender diversity and disaster relief programs among others.

These initiatives have made a significant impact in terms of indirect job creation, growth of private equity funding, improving the livelihood standards of rural communities, and reducing the knowledge gap, thus contributing towards Indian society at large.

CSR has become an integral part of a large number of companies, reflecting their commitment to the society. Companies have realized that CSR is an investment with multiple benefits for the corporate sector and is no longer viewed as a liability on corporate resources. Amcham is presenting this compendium to recognize the contributions made by U.S. companies to good governance and democratic principles covering a range of activities from raising living standards; combating disease, enhancing literacy levels and adopting ethical business practices.

Mr. A. Vaidheesh, Managing Director, Johnson & Johnson Medical India, who directed and guided this initiative at Amcham says, "The initiatives of the U.S. companies impact tens of thousands of lives by providing jobs, improving livelihood though financial aid and skill development." He added, "For most companies CSR has become a strategy to positively impact their chosen communities with affordable healthcare, women's empowerment; environment and water conservation."

The publication will serve as a useful guide for successful replication of these CSR activities by other companies in India.
