The Petroleum & Natural Gas Regulatory Board on 26th October 2015 has issued a Public Notice to invite bids for a Natural Gas Pipeline which will extend from Contai in West Bengal to Paradip and Cuttack in Odisha to the South and to Duttapulia on the India-Bangladesh border to the east. H-Energy Private Limited (HEPL) has welcomed the Public Notice.
The proposed Natural Gas Pipeline would act as a lifeline to the proposed Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) project in the offshore Digha region of West Bengal which was awarded recently to the consortium of HEPL and Excelerate Energy LP of USA by the Kolkata Port Trust. The development of a pipeline grid in eastern India will facilitate in large measure natural gas supplies from the offshore Digha FSRU project and from the proposed LNG Terminal in Dhamra to a wide cross-section of consumers in Odisha, West Bengal and Western Bangladesh.
“The approval by PNGRB for this pipeline will introduce the Eastern Indian markets as also those in Western Bangladesh to the benefits of an environmentally benign fuel,” said Mr. Darshan Hiranandani, Managing Director of HEPL.
Expressing satisfaction over this development, Mr. Darshan Hiranandani commented: “We believe that going forward, there would be increased participation of private players in the Natural Gas business, which will enhance competitiveness and benefit the end-consumers (domestic households, automobiles, commercial establishments as well as large industries) with an environment friendly and cheaper fuel.”
The Natural Gas Pipeline will also catalyze the development of City Gas Distribution networks in major cities of Eastern India, said Mr. Darshan Hiranandani. “It will be a boon for people, who will then enjoy the benefits of clean Natural Gas,” he concluded.
