The IILM Second International Conference on Responsible Management Education Training & Practice progressed into its second day on 9th January 2015.
The day started with the Opening Plenary. The conference was inaugurated by, His Excellency Mr. Jess Dutton, Deputy High Commissioner of Canada to India. The Welcome address was rendered by Prof. Rakesh Chaudhary, Senior Director, IILM. Mr. Jonas Haertle, Head – PRME Secretariat, UN Global Compact shared the UN’s Post – 2015 Development Agenda and implications of PRME. The opening plenary was concluded by a Special Address by Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee, Director General and CEO, Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs, Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India. The highlight of the session was the talk on dual goals of sustainable development: high human development and low ecological impact.
Dr. Sangeeta Chopra and Prof. Rahul Mishra – professors, IILM, then started session one. The session was titled as “Inclusive Equitable Education and Lifelong learning” inspired by proposed SDG 4. Mr. Anurag Batra, Chairman Business World and Exchange 4 Media; highlighted the concerns like how management education has become monotonous and how there is no linkage between management education and liberal arts. While, Dr. Raghuram, XLRI, Jamshedpur; shared how the concept of lifelong learning is linked to vedas and religious scriptures. He also mentioned that sustainability would also mean changing the egocentric decision-making should be replaced by ecocentric decision-making.
Session 2 was titled as “Skill development for employment and Sustainable Economic growth" and it was inspired from proposed SDG 8. It was coordinated by Prof. Sujit Sengupta and Prof. Suchi Parashar – professors, IILM. Mr. Dilip Chenoy, MD and CEO of NSDC highlighted how there is a 99.9% co-relation between human capital and economic growth. Mr. Pradeep Kashyap, Founder and CEO, MART shared the challenges of rural India in terms of identifying the kinds of training that may be required to train the artisans, craftsmen and masons and how every type of conventional training may not fit effectively into rural India due to its diversity. While Ambassador Deepak Vohra, Advisor to Prime Minister of Guinea- Bissau focused on how increasing unemployment is a hurdle in the path of achieving sustainable development. He also challenged some official sources like the ones that claim that poverty has halved in the last fifteen years.
The final session of the day was titled as “Role of Responsible Management in gender equality and women empowerment” and was inspired by proposed SDG 5. The session was moderated by Dr. Bhavleen Rekhi and Dr. Taruna Gautama - professors, IILM. Ms. Shabnam Siddiqui, Project Director, Global Compact Network India enlightened the audience about the various WEP’s (Women Empowerment Principles) launched by UN Global Compact an UNIFEM while also talking about how full incorporation of women’s capacities into labor forces would increase the national growth rates. Dr. Radha Sharma, HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management, the role of responsible business community in formulation of women empowerment goals.
The day was full of extreme knowledge sharing and received huge appreciation from the management students.
