Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan's Initiatives Raise Irrigation Potential

Water is a precious resource. The Maharashtra government, led by Chief Minister Shri Prithviraj Chavan, is committed towards conservation of water, ensuring its optimum use. More than 500 projects have been completed under his vision & leadership. Recent measures have resulted in improving the utilisation of created irrigation potential to 67%.
 
Commenting on the initiatives, Shri Chavan said, “Every drop matters. My government has undertaken various initiatives to ensure conservation of water.”
 
The state has been implementing the Rs 1,860-crore Maharashtra Water Sector Improvement Project with assistance from the World Bank to restore 6.45 lakh hectares of command areas of 235 projects along with dam safety works of 286 projects. Canal rehabilitation works on 176 projects and dam safety works of 237 projects have been completed.
 
Water use efficiency has increased by 37.5% – that is, from 96 ha per MM3 to 132 ha per MM3. Agricultural productivity has increased from Rs 3,532 per thousand cubic metres to Rs. 4,575 per thousand cubic metre – that is, by 29.53%.
 
Under the Vidharba Intensive Irrigation Programme, the Centre sanctioned Rs. 3,250 crore for eight cotton-growing districts in Vidharba. The scheme provides protective irrigation facilities, enhances water use efficiency and promotes better land use and crop management practices for improving agricultural yield.
