Non-Profit Networks and United Technologies Respond to Monsoon Devastation in India
New Delhi, Delhi, India, Tuesday, July 02, 2013 -- (Business Wire India) -- Humanitarian relief organization Corporate Disaster Resource Network, an initiative of the Aidmatrix Foundation, has received a donation of $20,000 USD (INR 1,100,000) from United Technologies Corp. to provide immediate assistance to families impacted by the recent monsoon flooding in Uttarakhand, India.
The contribution has helped to distribute approximately 5,500 early-response packages to families living in the villages of Joshiyara, Lugaadi, Piloth, Mando, Gangori and Gyansu. These packages include water, snacks, water purifying tablets, toiletries, and first aid supplies to help affected residents cope with the disaster's aftermath. The supplies are packaged in durable disaster support bags and distributed by Aidmatrix, in cooperation with India's National Disaster Management Authority.
The death toll from this natural disaster has already exceeded 800, and authorities anticipate it is likely to rise as additional areas are searched. Tens of thousands of people have already been evacuated, but reports indicate that many thousands more are still stranded in the region. Dozens of air force helicopters are steadily transporting emergency supplies, physicians, soldiers, food and medications to those most in need. The area is heavily traveled by Hindu pilgrims visiting holy shrines.
"Amid this horrific destruction, people and organizations remain resilient and are coming together to offer aid and basic supplies to families in need," said Palash Roy Chowdhury, who leads United Technologies' social responsibility efforts in India. "We are continuing to work closely with non-profits and local government officials to provide relief to families stranded in the mountainous region, and will seek other opportunities to help in the long term resettlement process as well."
"As the search and rescue missions continue, our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the families impacted by this natural disaster. I also want to commend the Indian Air Force for its massive rescue efforts in responding to this tragedy," he said.
United Technologies' businesses in India employ over 6,200 people at more than 100 locations in 60 cities, including three manufacturing facilities.
