Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, Thursday, July 25, 2013 -- (Business Wire India) -- "Thirukkural is a treasure trove. Its greatness is seen behind all religions and philosophies," said His Excellency Dr. K. Rosaiah, Governor of Tamil Nadu, conferring the Aram Award for the year 2012 on the 87-year-old Professor of Medicine, Padma Shree Dr. K.V. Thiruvengadam (Dr. KVT). One lakh cash prize was presented to the doctor in recognition of his selfless contribution to the field of medicine as a teacher, doctor, researcher and humanist. The awarding ceremony was held in a function arranged in the city recently (July 24, 2013).
"Thirukkural discusses power of virtue. It extols self-control and charity. It is applicable to the young and the old and at all times," added the Governor.
The Aram Award was instituted in the year 2003 by Shriram Ilakkiya Kazhagam (SIK), a literary wing of Shriram Group, to honour noble persons or institutions whose activities showcase the high ideals of the life as visualized by the Saint Poet Thiruvalluvar. The dynamic Chairman of the Shriram Group, Padma Bhushan R. Thyagarajan, is the reason behind the institution of the award.
Dr. KVT donated the rupees one lakh gift money towards the noble service of Sankara Nethralaya and said doctors as propounded in Thirukkural should first personally diagnose the patients and think on the medical attention they need rather than prescribing tests. Medicine is a field that requires utmost ethics than any other domain. Doctors should interact with patients a lot to understand the treatment that could be appropriate.
