Steria Smart Energy Management: the First Solution to Offer end-to-end Optimisation of Business Energy Use
Increasing numbers of companies are setting up in High Environmental Quality or even Green Office® buildings, such as those designed and built by Bouygues Immobilier. Despite this, until now there has not been an all-round, functional service offering for optimising energy use in these facilities. As a result, Steria has developed Smart Energy Management

Meudon, France and Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India, Friday, November 11, 2011 -- (Business Wire India) -- To put together this offering, Steria has built on its own experience in its energy-positive Green Office® facilities in Meudon. This summer, Steria was the first company to move into large-scale office premises of this nature. To manage these, Steria has developed a one-of-a-kind solution, known as Smart Energy Management, to manage the firm's energy use - as monitored by 19,000 sensors located throughout 23 000 m2 of space. The data is gathered in real time, floor by floor, office by office, recording energy production and consumption by type of use. For this facility, analysis goes far beyond what is required by RT2005 thermal regulations, extending to no fewer than 9 types of consumption including lifts, car park lighting and office automation energy use.

Smart Energy Management offers a threefold analysis, encompassing habits, comfort and the weather. It incorporates data about the building and makes adjustments for specific equipment, various types of use, employees' habits and how these change - as well as the weather outside.

"In many cases, energy optimisation strategies are still based merely on theoretical principles. The system developed by Steria makes it possible to use pragmatic data, fed back in real time and with an extremely high degree of accuracy. We can assess and simulate factors such as the impact of changes in employees' behaviour," explained François Praddaude, Executive Director for Energy, Utilities and Telecoms at Steria France.

Steria's offering goes even further. To ensure lower energy costs, Steria Consulting staff specialising in energy optimisation begin by drawing up an environmental performance report on their clients' facilities. Following this audit, Steria works with its clients to examine how to bring down energy consumption in the long term, including through the use of change management assistance.

In the near future, companies will be facing fresh challenges

Over and above optimising firms' energy use, working on the future of existing premises is already an important issue.

"The real challenge in the years to come is to make buildings themselves smart. Buildings can be altered to varying degrees, for instance by having an energy consumption system installed - sometimes even an energy generation system. Besides, we believe that simply helping the occupants of a building to change their habits can already lead to major reductions in energy use. This is why the integration of analysis and monitoring of habits, based on our own experience, is absolutely vital," emphasised François Praddaude.

Secondly, integrating buildings like these into "smart cities" represents a major milestone in optimised management of companies' energy use. Steria's experience with smart grids, particularly with the IssyGrid® project, means it can design optimisation systems which are better placed to anticipate energy use - particularly when it comes to "spikes" in demand.

IssyGrid® is France's first local smart grid set up by Issy-les-Moulineaux Council, Bouygues Immobilier and eight leading industrial players, including Steria. The goal is to enable energy optimisation at the neighbourhood level.

In response to an increasingly tight and complex energy market, IssyGrid® offers a local response to global environmental challenges. The smart grid will be gradually extended from its initial base in the Seine Ouest district to the entire city of Issy-les-Moulineaux. IssyGrid® will cover the needs of nearly 10,000 people in a 160,000 square-meter area. Very quickly, nearby residential buildings will be included as well.
