The Award, constituted by Andhra Pradesh State Government, and presented annually,is the most prominent award for Telugu Films, Theatre, and Television. VARUDU,directed by Gunasekhar, and produced by D.V.V. Danayya, was also dubbed into Malayalam and released as VARAN.

The Nandi Awards was launched in 1964 by the Government of Andhra Pradesh, and was designed as a way of providing accomplished and talented media & entertainment professionals with the endorsements and tools necessary to become recognised in the world of cinema and theatre. Nominations are accepted from films made between January 1 and December 31, and in order to be eligible for consideration of the jury, a film should be certified by the Central Board of Film Certification.
