Addressing the Rotary-sponsored UK and US Group Study Exchange (GSE) teams present on the occasion, Mr. Simkin said "India is a great nation that provides the international visitors a warm reception and rich cultural experience. Exposure to vocational and cultural practices in a land different from yours might have given you useful life changing experiences to take back home. By arranging the study programmes like GSE the Rotary Organization does a distinguishable job of promoting international understanding."

The Rotary International - District 3230 while celebrating the World Understanding Day also bid farewell to the UK and US teams that stayed in the city a month long on GSE programme - annual exchange organized by the Rotary Clubs across the globe facilitating the young professionals to experience the different cultures and promote goodwill and international understanding between nations.

Rotary, a global network of community volunteers, is one of the largest and most influential international humanitarian service organizations worldwide. Founded in Chicago on February 23, 1905, today over 12 lakhs members belong to 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. As Rotary members strive to build goodwill and peace, and provide humanitarian service in their communities and throughout the world, its founding day is recognized as `World Understanding Day'.

The farewell was arranged to 10 members who in 2 teams (5 from US and 5 from UK) and aged between 25 and 40 years were in the city since January 24, 2011, studying and experiencing our culture and institutions, observing how our vocations are practiced, developing personal and professional relationships, and exchanging their views and ideas.

The professionals were chosen as a part of this year's knowledge exchange programme between Rotary District 3230 Chennai and two other Districts: RI Dist. 5220 Central Valley of California, USA and RI Dist. 1220 Nottingham, England.

The teams during the first fortnight of this month met Worshipful Mayor of Chennai Shri. M. Subramanian and interacted and exchanged views about the state and its people, their vocation, the Chennai city, cultural shocks and surprises and other similarities and differences experienced, as part of the study.

The RI Dist 3230 which played the host facilitated the stay and study of the participants during the programme and exposed them to ample club presentations, formal visits and social events, cultural events and vocational visits in the areas of each member's expertise and interest. Kalashetra, Egmore Museum, Dakshinachitra, Cholamandal Artists' Village, Vellore Golden Temple and Thiruvannamalai Temple among others were some of the places of the state's pride visited by the guests.
