IILM Distinguished Global Thinker, Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Reinforced Pandit Nehru's "Tryst with Destiny" Speech
New Delhi, Delhi, India, Friday, March 12, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- IILM Institute for Higher Education hosted its Distinguished Global Thinker Award at Lodhi Road campus on March 5, 2010. The award was conferred to Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Minister of State for External Affairs.
IILM instituted The Global Thinker Award in 2006 to get engaged with the global academic community as well as to provide a forum for policy debate on issues of international importance. The institute initiates an annual award to honour an internationally reputed leader for his/her academic achievements.
Welcoming the distinguished gathering, Ambassador K V Rajan, Converor, IILM India Forum remarked," I would like to say that this is the fifth in the series of Distinguished Global Thinkers Awards instituted by IILM. So, this is a lecture to which we attach a great importance and we are very pleased and priviledged that Dr. Shashi Tharoor has agreed to accept this award from IILM and also to deliver this special lecture".
Since 2006, IILM has honoured distinguished leaders, such as Prof. Lord Bhikhu Parekh, Prof. MS Swaminathan, Prof. C.K. Prahalad and Lord Meghnad Desai who addressed the gathering on issues of international concern such as 'Is Democracy Exportable?', 'Achieving a Hunger Free India: The Challenges before us', 'Democratizing Commerce: The Challenge for the 21st Century' and 'Our Troubled Times' in their lectures at IILM.
Dr Tharoor addressed "Challenges of global governance: An Indian perspective". Indians have a growing stake in international developments: whether is the food we grow and eat, the air we breathe, our health, prosperity and quality of life are affected by what happens beyond our borders. Unfortunately, the global governance structures that are in place today are of 1945 vintage rather than reflecting the emergence of major powers across the world. In this milieu, "What we in India are looking for is a more inclusive multilateralism, and not, as some American and Chinese observers have suggested, a G2 condominium," argued Dr Tharoor.
Reform of the governance structures of the United Nations, World Bank and IMF, thus, is overdue. Europe has 5 per cent of the world's population but has 33 per cent of the seats in the Security Council! This disproportionate influence of erstwhile powers is also seen in the Bank and IMF. The reality of 2010 is that new emerging powers seek greater voice and participation. The dominance of a handful of small industrialized Western countries looks anomalous in a world in which power has shifted the West to the East. "Our objective, frankly, in the long term is broad parity between developed countries and the developing/transition economies, and we would see this therefore only as a first step" advocated Dr Tharoor.
He concluded by reminiscing Nehru ji's dreams in his historic 'tryst with destiny' speech "Those dreams are for India, but they are also for the world, for all the nations and peoples are too closely knit together today for any one of them to imagine that it can live apart. Peace has been said to be indivisible; so is freedom, so is prosperity now, and so also is disaster in this One World that can no longer be split into isolated fragments."
