Harvard Receives Government Grant to Bring the 'Kumbh Mela' Story to India's Hindi Populace

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

The Harvard University South Asia Institute (SAI) has received a grant from the Uttar Pradesh Government to translate its book - Kumbh Mela: Mapping the Ephemeral Megacity – to Hindi. While the original English version opened up the book to global audiences, the Hindi translation will make it accessible to millions of India’s Hindi-speaking populace. The translated copies are expected to be used as an academic resource in Universities and as a case study of governance and administration for the benefit of public officials. The Uttar Pradesh Government itself will receive 500 translated copies of the book.

The book, the result of rich collaboration between faculties of the professional schools at Harvard, consolidates research findings and serves as an example of interdisciplinary research conducted at Harvard. It has produced a wide set of teaching tools across the disciplines of public health, data science, architecture, urban planning, business, religion and culture.

The Government grant comes on the back of the successful launch of the book in New Delhi on the 17th of August 2015, which was attended by more than 300 representatives of the Government, the media, Harvard community circles and distinguished personalities from Indian academia.
