“Staying updated with the changes in the industry has become inevitable for every professional in every layer of the human resource. Building the youth for the future is vital as the demand for workforce required for growth will be more in the near future,” appealed Thiru. T.K. Ramachandran IAS, Secretary - Information Technology, Government of Tamil Nadu, to the academic and the corporate leaders gathered during 19th Edition of large Industry-Institute Interaction Event `ICTACT Bridge 2015’ organized today (17th Feb 2015) by The ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu (ICTACT) at Chennai Trade Centre.
“Events like this are essential for the moment of the era. ICTACT’s Digital Literacy has evolved into being the pioneer of positioning India as a digitally empowered nation,” he added.
Industry leaders including Thiru. Lakshmi Narayanan, Vice Chairman, Cognizant Technology Solutions, participated in the event. ICTACT Bridge 2015 witnessed over 1000 participants from the academic and the corporate community across India and was supported by Department of Information Technology Government of Tamil Nadu.
Dr. C. SylendraBabu IPS, ADGP, Coastal Security Group, Tamil Nadu, pointed to the enormous mismatch in the industry demand and supply of quality workforce. From his observation he put in view the fact that students these days lack the ability to consume content, understand, develop ideas and are incapable of applying the knowledge acquired in practice. He emphasized that continuous learning ability in students should be triggered in a way that they are open to change and evolve continuously and stay relevant to the industry and society for a longer span of time.
On the growth of digital space and the skills needed, Thiru. Ravi Viswanathan, President – Growth Markets, Tata Consultancy Services, said “To catch up with fast expanding digital world, we need more number of digital experts than mere digital literates for our country to emerge stronger. Digital economy of our country is at 60 billion dollars contributing to about 2.7% of our nation’s GDP. There is going to be a rapid growth in the coming years and the present 4.5 lakh workforce is to increase four-fold in the next five years.”
“The digital expansion is going to change the way we use data. It will take the personalized care to a much better league in the future. The growth has given way for Data science to become an emerging programme of studies and the enrolment trend in US reveals a drastic increase in students opting for such a study,” he added.
“Banking is one amongst the two sectors that highly rely on IT and its alternative platforms for functioning. Today, IT has made banking easier than ever that but for operation of lockers, customers need not visit the banks. It is imagination that rules the digital world and it has become mother of inventions. Now, it has become the responsibility of institutions to not only teach the coding but also encourage students to be creative, inculcating the talent of imagination in them. This will help meet the employability skills demanded by the digital world,” said Dr. N. Kamakodi, MD & CEO, City Union Bank.
The day’s programme was packed with bustling activities. A Postal Cover was released commemorating successful 5 years since ICTACT’s inception. Women Edupreneurs’ Forum saw honouring of successful education women leaders from across the state. Besides, `Best Techno Faculty’; `Best Techno Teacher’ and `Best Tech School’ were other awards given in honor of achievements pertaining to educational space. ICTACT’s Digital Literacy Programme aiming at providing digital literacy to over 25,000 individuals with low technological knowledge in the year 2015, was also launched.
The Women Edupreneurs’ Forum celebrated the diversity in Women Leadership emerging in the education sector at Tamil Nadu. The forum was chaired by Ms. Padma Chandrasekaran, Advisor, Angel Investor and Management and Dr. Latha Pillai, Director, RGNID (Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development).
`ICTACT Digital India Pledge 2015’ campaign aimed at triggering and injecting vigor to the Nation's vision to empower at least one person per household with crucial digital literacy skills by 2020. The Nation’s vision is to touch lives of more than 5 million individuals in the next four years through digital literacy skills. The ICTACT `Digital India Pledge 2015’ is an initiative under the ICTACT Digital Literacy Mission, which is helping people develop the skills required to interact in the digital world. The pledge was taken collaboratively by Institution and Corporate communities present during the event.
“The digital literacy programme is going to benefit 25,000 students and 2000 teachers. To enhance teaching-learning process Anna University has developed 175 curriculum-based e-content. It is also providing research platform for research in the field. All which will contribute towards bridging the demand and supply gap of the rapidly developing digital world,” said Thiru M. Rajaram, Vice Chancellor, Anna University.
Talks/panel discussions by industry experts that focused on Digital Business, Digital Technologies, Digital Workforce/Skills and Digital Leadership in line with this year’s theme `The Big Digital World’ and parallel sessions with Chairmans/HR Managers convergences were slated for the day.
ICTACT Chairmans’ Convergence 2015 enlightened the leaders in the academia on driving educational institutions towards excellence by strategically outshining the impediments in the pursuit. ICTACT HR Managers’ Convergence 2015 brought together HR & Talent Development Managers to discuss on the challenges and best practices in dealing `The Digital Workforce’.
ICTACT is a public-private partnership initiative of Government of India, Government of Tamil Nadu and industry, focusing to improve the quality of students passing out of institutions in Tamil Nadu. Since inception in 2011, ICTACT has conducted 18 editions of this conference at various locations in the state of Tamil Nadu with different themes to discuss the skill gap issues, identify solvers and dissolve the industry-academia split to empower the education ecosystem.
