Bangalore, Karnataka, India

Formula Manipal came up with a sterling performance at the recently concluded JK Tyres Formula Design Challenge 2015 competition at Coimbatore. With 36 teams in the fray, the single-seater car designed by the engineering students of Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal University finished second in the overall championship.

The JK Tyres Formula Design Challenge 2015, an engineering design competition for undergraduates, is being held for the first time. The objective of this competition is to design, build, test and compete with an open wheeled, single-seater formula style racecar. The team, participating with its latest creation christened the FMX4, bagged the highest number of trophies, a total of seven in the competition. The car was the fastest on track in the competition.

Team leader, Abhinav Sharma said, “We finished first in acceleration and skid pad events, second in endurance and efficiency and third in autocross and design event.” An excited Abhinav said that Formula Manipal was the only team to have competed in all static and dynamic events after being the first to complete technical scrutiny. “The team then went on to finish on the podium in all dynamic events,” he added.

Abhinav also said that in the acceleration event, FM clocked 4.19 seconds which was better than the previous best, also by FM 2013 which had a time of 4.55 seconds. “Our time was the best,” Abhinav said. Even in the skid pad event the team clocked 5.76 seconds which again was the best. In static events, the team secured third position in Design event and performed well in Cost Analysis and Business Presentation events.

The team also received appreciation and motivation from the renowned Formula Student Germany (FSG) judges Pat Clarke and Claude Rouelle.“The team is now focused on building its next creation that will take the bar even higher in terms of engineering design, lesser weight and even better performance,” the team leader concluded.

Formula Manipal is one of Manipal Institute of Technology's oldest student projects. With the aim of introducing young engineering undergraduates to the intricacies of race car engineering, the team released its first car in the year 2008. The team participates in Formula Student Competitions across the globe where the aim is to conceptualise, design and fabricate a single-seater, formula-style racecar under the comprehensive guidelines laid down by SAE International.

The team has since participated in Formula Student events at some of the most prestigious motorsport venues in the UK, Austria, Italy, Germany and Czech Republic. Formula Manipal’s tryst with the podium began in the year 2013 with “FMX3” when the team was placed second for the Cost Report Analysis Event at Formula Student Germany 2013. Right after this, at Czech Republic, Formula Manipal became the First Indian FSAE Team to finish all dynamic events at any Formula Student event using a self-designed electro-pneumatic gear shifting mechanism.
