To address the important issue of organ donation Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals today organized a symposium which witnessed presence of renowned Doctors from leading hospitals share a common platform and confer on how to combat dearth of organ donors.
The symposium was attended by Dr Subodh Kumar (Consultant & Additional Professor, AIIMS), Dr Subash Gupta, (Chief Liver Transplant Surgeon, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals), Dr Yogesh Chawla (Director, PGI), Dr Arti Vij (Organ Retrieval Banking Organization), Mr. Nidhin (ACP Sarita Vihar) along with prominent Doctors from Institute of Liver & Biliary Sciences (ILBS), Medanta, Fortis Hospitals, and BLK Hospitals.
Organ donation is quickly evolving into a major treatment protocol across all major hospitals. However, it is yet to make a significant dent in India. With each passing year, the gap between the number of organs donated and the people waiting for organ donation is getting larger.
Commenting the current status of organ transplantation, Dr Subash Gupta, Chief Liver Transplant Surgeon, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, said, “With the success of organ transplantation as an effective modality of treating end stage disease of various organs, organ transplant has become a victim of its own success, with organ demand outstripping the supply. The donor pool consists of either "living" or "cadaveric" donors. This pool is however limited especially when one talks of cadaveric donors. Despite performing 350 Liver transplants at Centre for Liver and Biliary Sciences, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, Delhi this year there have been very few cadaveric organ donations.”
In Cadaveric donors has largely meant "brain dead" or "heart beating" donors. However in the west about 15% of cadaveric transplants are being performed from organs retrieved from Non-heart beating donors (donation after cardiac death) and recently world’s first transplant of a “dead heart” has taken place in Australia. This surgical technique can significantly increase the number of potential donor organs in near future.
The effective execution of cadaveric organ donation centres on the education of masses and proactive attitude towards cadaveric organ donation. The Government needs to step in with resources to increase awareness and educate the public on importance of organ donation.
Apollo Transplant Institutes were created with the aim of providing world class transplant services across the region.
